I bet the Padres just replace Hosmer with Wil Myers. Expiring contract so no future financial benefits, but he has an even higher AAV that would save them more money with the luxury tax this year. He is languishing on the bench now and probably would welcome the trade to rebuild his free agent value for next year.

This seems like the most justifiable use of a no-trade clause ever. Who wants to move across the country, leave San Diego for DC, and leave a playoff team for a non-contender? Question is can they find another taker for him (regardless of how the Soto deal gets finished).

There are some tweets floating around suggesting that Mickey Moniak has been traded. Source says he hasn’t been traded; he is with the Phillies on the taxi squad for the two-game series in Atlanta. En route now.

On another note it seems like the last thing the Phillies would want to do now is move up from the 6th wild card, though obviously you can't finesse that (lest you fall to 7th). But right now we'd be looking at a Padres-Braves first-round series (or Padres-Mets). I suppose that is what San Diego is really chasing (the #4 seed and home field). Then they are well-armed for a SoCal NLDS.

The taxi squad is a bit of a mystery this year. Technically it is still only for COVID. But that does make sense since the combo of tonight's game and tomorrow's day game means it would be almost impossible for any traded player or call-up to arrive.

Eric Hosmer rejected the trade to Washington and will not be part of the Soto deal, per source. Now the Padres have less than five hours to figure out what to do with Hosmer, who is owed $39 million from 2023-25.

So if we want to read tea leaves about Moniak without it actually being about Moniak, we know the Phillies are interested in Phillips, who can't hit a lick (right now) but would be defensive upgrade. Presumably Herrera gets DFA'ed (if he's not traded) should that happen. So then Moniak would step into the dugout. True for any other part-time OF they might acquire too.

Padres could easily just keep him as an occasional 1B/DH. Myers is terrible and could be released if traded and Luke Voit is not that great either.

Phillips has some of the largest platoon splits I have even seen. He might be acceptable against RHP though not sure he is any better than Odubel. But he is a complete zero against LHP. Literally an .057 OPS against LHP this year and like .350 career.

The Toronto Blue Jays are finalizing a deal with the Miami Marlins, sources tell ESPN. Shortstop Jordan Groshans is going to Miami. Zach Pop and others are going to Toronto.

Pablo Lopez is not in the deal.

For sure he has completely cratered but still has a positive defensive WAR. Obviously they would like to think he can get back to what he was last year at least. Multiple teams interested apparently (though not enough to pay the non-DFA trade price).
