Interesting athlete though I would also think the Phillies would not risk it in the first round. Seems more of a sandwich pick to me.

Bigger, more power, better arm, and doing it at Vandy is a little different. He’s got holes that he made big progress on this year- he may have Alec Bohm syndrome where he hits more to the opposite field and on the ground than he should, but his swing doesn’t look geared to the opposite field like Alec.

Gelb on the Athletic also mocks Porter to the Phillies in their "beat writer" mock draft. Rocker went early (10) and Snelling was the pick before the Phillies. Barriera still on the board when Gelb selected.

Maybe it’s too risky to go with a prep pitcher in the first round for the third consecutive draft, but the Phillies’ current strength is developing pitchers and it might be best to stick with what has worked. Under Brian Barber as scouting director, the Phillies have shifted toward prioritizing upside over certainty. They haven’t been afraid to use high picks on players outside traditional baseball breeding areas — their 2020 first-rounder, Mick Abel, came from Oregon. So Porter, one of the best prep arms in this class, fits what the Phillies have targeted before.

Law’s latest mock has the Phillies with college lefty Carson Whisenhunt, who has unremarkable stuff and was suspended for the year. Yuck. This pick was on the basis that they want someone who can get to the big leagues to help quickly, or who can establish value to trade over the winter. Rocker or Priellipp would seem to be the better choice in that scenario.

I think I am in the Rocker camp if we want someone to move quickly. No need to game service time if you think he'll blow out his arm in 5 years (not that I advocate usage that would accelerate that of course).

Do we think Law has truly solid information on that potential Phillies approach? I mean, there is also a difference between drafting someone who can help this year/have short-term trade value vs. just taking a college player who can help much sooner - but not immediately - compared to a HS player.

Law's logic doesn't seem un-sound though: a lefty, with no surgery history, or tread on his arm from this past season.

Law seemed to have pretty good info on the Phillies during the Wolever era and during the early Almarez era (I think). Kiley McDaniel seems to have the best info on the Phillies now though the Phillies have been way better at not leaking during the past 3-4 years.

In retrospect I might argue that the tighter ship under Klentak (on all things) was also reflective of a more insular and disconnected front office. The same thing that produces gossip produces connections and relationships.

It's not too dissimilar to government and politics. Oftentimes, the worst, least competent leaders are the ones who are most secretive.

Well, I also think that during the Wade/Gillick/Amaro years you still had all those front office old-timers and friendly beat writers constantly communicating, and that wasn't necessarily good (nor was the info necessarily reliable). At this point virtually nobody (in the front office or covering the team) is dealing with someone they known for 10 years, let alone had a beer with at some point. Except Dombrowski with national guys.

I will be very unhappy if the Phils draft a soft tossing college lefty, in the first round. with no second round pick (I had no problem giving up the pick for Casty before, now I'm pausing) they better get a legitimate prospect. if this happens, it will really take the shine off the 3 day weekend.

I still think it will be an interesting draft, especially after the top 3 to 5.
If the Phils get either of Lesko, Barriera, Neto, Collier, along with a couple of others, I'd be OK.

It is their worst pick since 2012, when they didn't have one, so I would think anyone they take is going to have some warts. Granted, they got Stott and Abel (as well as J.P. Crawford) in similar spots. And Hamels and and Utley once upon a time.

What we know for sure is Barber has a better chance of making a good pick at 17 than his two predecessors did at 10 or higher.

BA has a new mock draft up this morning. Gave us Barrieia. I should note that before our pick at 17, 13 position players were picked and only 3 pitchers.

Barriera seems to have plenty of potential homes throughout the middle of the first round, but we’ll take him off the board here with the Phillies like our previous mock draft. All the other college pitchers are getting some buzz with the Phillies here and they were apparently one of the teams scouting Gonzaga righthander Gabriel Hughes quite aggressively.

good article, in the Inquirer, on the 4 Horsemen (now 3) at Jersey Shore. the phils are trying to build an arsenal of arms and should keep it going. I'd love to see Porter or Prielipp here ( I don't think Lesko will get there) but I would be ok with Barrieia. keep the arms coming.
