Freddy is hurt. He's playing through it now, but that's obviously part of his poor defense. When they acquired him they also weren't expecting him to play 3B, or play every day. Bohm was still on the team. Both of those things expose him at his age, especially when he's also not 100%. If he was just platooning with Didi and starting one other time a week, maybe he'd be better.
The fact that two of our 8 line-up spots are always taken by Didi, Torreyes or Freddy, and on some days a third by Knapp, is probably still a bigger problem than Gibson.
And I wouldn't say any of these guys are doing harm. They are doing less harm than the guys they replaced (though that is arguable with Bohm since he was hitting).
All of the Phillies deadline moves over the past three years, I think, have been a reflection of their lack of aggression and lack of available talent to trade (or in some cases, money to spend), as much poor evaluation of the guys they acquire. Given Gibson's additional year of control and Crouse, that was still a good deal. You also have to include Suarez's performance as a starter. Kennedy's had a lot of bumps, but if Suarez was still closing how many Matt Moore starts would we have lost compared to his blown saves?
