If we lose our first round pick to sign Harper, at least we are assured of getting a star player. As opposed to actually exercising the pick and selecting another Fudd.

The rules changed- it's tough to keep up with. Now all first picks are picks are protected. Depending on your status as a revenue sharer, recipient, or luxury tax team the penalties are different. For the Phils, they'd just lose their second pick and $500k international. So hypothetically, they could sign Harper and Machado and only lose their second pick because Machado was traded in his contract year and therefore can't be tied to compensation.

At this point one can make a cold calculation about the value of a draft pick (and certainly our front office would). Arrieta still managed a 2.9 WAR this year. Let's figure he provides six or seven total (pessimistically assuming 2.0 next year and 1.0 the next, or 4.0 next year and he opts out). Even without considering short vs. long term, that was probably worth the third round pick. And I'm confident Harper will be worth the second round pick. But it - and presumed future deadline deals - do have a cumulative affect, as we saw with the 2009-2011 teams.

I'd hate to lose that second round pick. With the second pick we have actually had some success. First round? Does it matter?

I get the sarcasm but obviously you want the higher pick (it would also cost a lot more signing $ if you didn't have the #1)

I am surprised we have not traded for any sandwich picks the last couple of years especially last season. If one has depth and 40-man issues it seems a natural choice to make.

This is the unfortunate reality of having 4 top 10 draft picks and not having 3 or 4 of them rank as top 100 prospects.

Having only one of them on the top 100 list, Bohm--and he is probably on there based upon his draft pedigree more so than his actual performance as a pro--is downright incomprehensible.

Not many teams that don't value those sandwich picks now especially if the Orioles are done giving them away (but not completely, judging by recent int'l move).

At this point it is looking like 15th is most likely, with a chance for 14th if we keep losing and the Angels win a few more

Mets lose to clinch at least 13th and eliminate us for the 12th spot. We're not catching them. Twins' magic number to clinch at least 13th and lock us in at no higher than 14 where we are now is 1. Too much tanking too late. We should have started this in July. We'ld easily be top 10 if not top 5.

With the win, we are eliminated from #13. The Angels can still knock us down to 15th.

We end up at 14 (13th worst record but Atlanta gets the #9 pick for failing to sign Carter Stewart).

Some dispute over whether the Braves offered a proper contract to the number one pick they failed to sign last year.

Grievence described as a longshot so don't get your hopes up for both the Braves losing a pick and the Phillies moving up a slot.

BA has its first 2019 Mock Draft up. Has the Phillies taking Prep RHP Daniel Espino from Georgia which doesn't seem like their current M.O. but maybe that's a good thing.
