My initial take

While the older Australians, French kid, Taiwanese kid and the catcher from China are on the roster with regard to the Latin Americans in the July 2 classes:

From the July 2, 2018 Class only Starlyn Castillo
From the July 2, 2017 Class only Luis Garcia and Carlos Betancourt (No Puello, No Vargas)

Just a reminder Minor League Spring Training begins today but the Phillies are off on Day 1.

They open tomorrow against the Pirates system. AAA Phillies and AA Phillies are home and the High A and Low A Phillies are at the Pirates

Greg Giombaresse, the PR director of the Blueclaws, informs me that he will post game summaries at his blog,

as long as the Phils continue to provide summaries to their affiliates (which they have over the years). He does a great job, it's a blog you can go to in order to get info on all the games in one place.

By the way, he already has reviews posted of all the players who have a chance to play in Lakewood who are position players. The articles are a good read for minor league followers trying to refresh their memories!

...and as mentioned in the Spring training thread Odúbel Herrera will hit in a game today so something to keep an eye out for even if people are only interested in the big league team. I'm expecting a bounce back year for el Torito so hoping to hear some good reports about his recovery.

I have attended minor league games in previous springs where a ML player took at bats. It is not uncommon for the ML player to take an at bat in every inning For example, Herrera might bat first each time the Phillies come to bat and then they resume the regular batting order with the next hitter to the plate. These games at the complex can bend the rules as they wish. It's just practice to get ready for the upcoming season and help the Phillies set the rosters for the start of the various minor league seasons.

FIRST GAME REPORT!!!

Baseball Ross attended the AA game today...details at his website below:

Almost all of thee players will be in CLW or below, there are a lot of people playing with the MLB group that will push others down, and the AAA level has about 40 players right now, too.

Herrera and C Hernandez both played in the minor league games--since the reports don't include results, I suspect they went hitless. I'm sure they're behind.

Again, the only game report I can find is an article on Thursday's low-A game v. the Blue Jays from Baseball Ross. Low-A Phils won 2-1, Ben Brown (the focus of the article) pitched well, not much other detail.

Greg G reports that he has yet to receive any game results from the Phils, which means no coverage of minor league spring training games if that continues. Sad.

I was able to catch just a couple innings yesterday in person at the complex in Clearwater after leaving the Astros' shellacking of the major league Phillies in the big stadium. 3 quick observations from the tail end of the game that was dubbed the "AA" game:

1) Alec Bohm is VERY tall but looked agile in brief play at 3B. Unfortunately he did the same thing at the plate as I read was his problem last year: pounding the ball in to the ground rather than hitting line drives or using his great length to generate loft and power
2) Luis Garcia does not look 18 or 19. He has more meat on his frame than I would have thought. The closest physical profile that quickly came to mind was Jimmy Rollins, though Garcia may have a thicker lower half.
3) LHP Zach Warren had gaudy numbers in Lo-A last year and looked dominant yesterday. Hard sinking fastball and good breaking ball. He and Dohy give the Phillies something to dream on in terms of lefty relievers, they both could move quickly.

Pretty detailed report on the "group 5" game from PhuturePhillies:

Oakmont CC was probably a little overmatched. Last line alludes to perhaps a future international slot deal. We must have an agreement with somebody and are trying to find the slots to fit them in.

Logan Simmons to 3B seems as predicted as well (and he also had a 3B). Assume Holmes was at 1B because they wanted to play everyone. Hopefully Holmes gets to play 3B at Lakewood with Bohm at Clearwater and Simmons at Williamsport. Starting to build a little depth at 3B.
