I think Betances on a 1 year deal is a potentially excellent idea. I don't believe he is going to get 10 million, if he was he would have signed by now. Betances on a 1 year/7 million plus incentives is to me a low risk high reward deal. He knows Girardi and is yet another player experienced in the high pressure New York atmosphere.
Look, the Phils are going to sign a reliever or two, its as predictable as the sun coming up in the east and setting here on the west coast. They are all fungible, mostly erratic and rarely consistent from year to year. Given these circumstances, give me a guy who if he comes back could well be the team's closer. And he still throws harder than 90% of the Phils pen.
I could be wrong but my sense is that he has always wanted to join Girardi in Philadelphia but was hoping that external competition from the Mets might increase his price tag. Its so interesting that most of the players seem to be using rivals within the NL East division to up their ante.
Personally I like what the Phils have done so far and doubt they are finished. Betances would be a nice addition in my book and if he doesn't work out he can sit next to Hunter and Robertson in the press box. At least with him, there is a potential investment return this year.
