I just don't think they'll keep Joseph on the 40. They'll probably pay Franco's raise w/o any trouble, especially since they can send him to AAA as a last resort.

I do agree Klentak is all about options here. He has to trade one of the middle IFs, IMO, but not both. (And he doesn't have to, if Crawford spends a few months in AAA. But he should).

Anyway, all these position changes have been ordered by the front office, not the manager. If the offers for Galvis aren't good they can indeed keep him around as a utility guy or starting 2B (or 3B) for a while and they may want to do that anyway.

I agree that Joseph just doesn't have a future with the Phillies. Had he not had the concussion problems and had developed as a catcher, he would have much more value. I doubt that Joseph will have much value this off season. Maybe he goes like Ruf last off season. He will be gone before the set date for the 40 man roster.

The common theme on this board has been that we have a lot of "nice players" but no true stars and without stars we really wouldn't be able to get to the next level. What we have seen the last two months, as CD points out, is that that might really be conpleatly wrong and we might have 2 young generational stars. If this is true then to maximize their value it may be a better philosophy to surround them with as many decent complimentary players as a wealthy team can afford and try to get into the playoffs as often as you can to give your stars as many chances as possible to win it all. I'm buying into it and hoping we open the checkbook, as well as make trades, to put a competitive team on the field next year.

Third base has been a black hole these past two years and I'd look to trade for an upgrade. The guy who intrigues me the most is Eugenio Suárez but there are others who would fit the bill such as trading for Machado. I'd offer Crawford to Cincy in a package for Suárez. I'd look to sign Darvish and see if you could entice Otani to join him. If not trade for another starter. I'd also look into getting a top notch RP, Holland as a FA or trade for someone like Iglesias. I also wouldn't rule out trading with the Marlins for one of their OF in the thought that Williams or Altherr may regress. We have an embarrassing small payroll for a major market team and have some young exciting players. We should try to put a winning team on the field next year with the possibility of getting into the playoffs.

Why are you trading Crawford when Galvis is a free agent after 2018? Not to mention Galvis still isn't good enough (okay, maybe if you got Machado he would be).

"Generational stars," get back to me in 2019 and 2020. We have no idea what Hoskins' first full season will be like. And Herrera is the real thing but it would be a fallacy to assume that some kind of switch turned on for him that will define him for the rest of his career. History says he's got more valleys ahead of him as well as peaks. If you're not sure about Altherr and Williams how can you be so sure about Hoskins and Herrera? Yes, they are better, so if they regress the floor is higher, but they could still regress.

It's not out of the question that they try to make the playoffs next year but you don't do that based on six weeks of baseball.

Ka-Boom. Seems like it was a week ago [it was actually 46 hours] that the Phils trailed the Marlins 7-2. Since Hoskins homered in the bottom of the 7th inning of Game 1, Phils have outscored the Fish 25-2. Ka-Boom.

By the way, this is no pinch me moment, I do not believe. This Phillie team is good. Not as good as they will be in a couple of years, but good.

And even better for us..they are beginning to realize it. And thats half the battle.

Have you ever looked at Suarez's stats?

He is a 26 year old 4war player that while he plays 3b now has played 180 MLB games at SS. Trading Crawford for him would make sense since you would have the option of resigning a still young Galvis to play SS or of sliding Suarez over to play there.

Have you looked at his home/road splits? 1.029OPS at GAB. .711 on the road. 1HR every 62 ABs on the road.

Klentak has to be careful in these deals. Trading a guy like Hernandez for a couple good prospects almost compounds the problem if they need Rule V Protection. I would rather see him take a couple players and find a solid ML player to be honest, say trade a guy like Hernandez and Franco for a better 3B or a starting pitcher. This is going to be a very tricky period, there are so many things that need to be balanced at once, you hope that Klentak has assistants that will be looking at things from each direction. This is going to be so complex that I (hope) his whole staff will be involved, it isnt going to be just looking at what we get for who we send, it will be who we then lose or expose that is needed and how we manage the money not to lose guys later because we "Amaro'd" it.

The thing is, if you're that impressed with Suarez's season, he's going to cost you a lot more than Crawford (including pitching the Phillies don't really have), as the Reds have zero motivation to trade him. Conversely, if you think he's actually more like a 2-3 WAR player you wouldn't even trade Crawford for him. This isn't the year to cut bait on Franco, unless you can trade for Machado.

Now, if you could get Suarez for Alfredo Simon....
