Kingery's "role" is whatever his talent/skills define it as being - it's not something that's externally decided and imposed upon him - not by the organization, not by fans. He's "expected to develop into a top player." This for a kid you never heard of two years ago, and who you likely discounted heavily as recently as last winter (I don't feel like looking up the posts, but...). If he doesn't "meet expectations," then he's a failure - regardless of what his actual value is.
This is a formula for failure - deciding what a player should be, and then being disappointed/dissatisfied when what he can be is not what you decided he should be. Very common with Phillies phans (too common with Phillies phans), but "common" isn't a synonym for "good," or "wise," or "right."
This is closer to the mark. Kingery's job (any player's job) is to do what he can do, to be what he can be.
