I'd rank Aparichio behind Marchan and Duran and O'Hoppe. Maybe even Gutierrez. A little too soon to rank Nava also, but he might project as a better hitter too. Just doing things a year younger than Aparicio who is an offense first prospect at the moment. The depth of guys who could be backups is good. The hope with Marchan is that he has both defense and enough offense to be more of a starting prospect.

Just to note that when the Gregorius signing becomes official, the Phils' roster will be full, at 40. I don't know if the Phils can delay this until after tomorrow at 2 pm (when the Rule 5 draft concludes). If they can, they might still participate in the draft; if they finalize the Gregorius signing prior to noon tomorrow, it looks like they'll be sitting it out.

You would think if they have any interest in someone they would delay the signing. They just finally signed Wheeler a couple days ago, my guess is these signings always take a few days.

Of course delaying also allows for the possibility of someone swooping in or the Player changing his mind (See Eagles signing of Frank Gore)

My guess is that they probably are still in the Rule V 5, just not sure there is a big push for it. We have more than enough young, questionable relievers already.

Gregorius had a bad year coming off of surgery. Surely they wouldn't sign him without a physical. I really hope they wouldn't. I'm not sure it matters much, unless there's someone they think will be there at their draft position that they like more than someone now on the 40-man, whom they'd have to waive in a few days. We'll have at least another minor signing. I doubt we have any intention to draft in the Rule 5.

My prediction:
1. The Gregorius Signing is Not Official Yet.
2. We take someone in the Rule 5 draft.
3. We trade that selection for 250K in international cap allocation.
4. We finalize the Gregorius signing.

This is certain. That physical could take place today, if Gregorius is available to come to Philly; an official signing could theoretically happen later today, as well - but that's the quickest they could really do it. If the physical slides until tomorrow morning, the Rule 5 draft will be over by the time they actually complete the signing.

Squire's point is interesting - it's not uncommon for a club to make a Rule 5 selection for another club, based on a pre-arranged deal. Gives us something to watch for tomorrow!

I noticed that Wheeler flew in for his physical last Thursday but they did not officially announce the signing until Monday. For a few days there, I wondered if something was up with the results. In the end, nothing was but it could also take a few days.

Sometime next week, will there be a joint press conference for both of them?

Yeah I don't think it will be that hard to delay the signing.

Picking 15th I'm not sure there'd be a team to trade with, unless one of the teams ahead of us wants a second guy. I think they could easily grab a relief pitcher or defensive OF if there's anyone there, no real downside to doing so for the moment. There are people on the roster who can (and will) still be cut loose.

I wonder if there is a delay to get approval for insurance on the contract, but you'd have to think they wouldn't cover a TJ elbow right?

That is honestly about the optimistic view possible. I think we would all like to see more money spent on international cap, but I just dont think it is going to happen this year. We still have what, about $2M, it will be hard to even spend that at this point I fear.

Rule 5 draft spots are only really valuable for the first few. After about selection #5 I dont think they have any real value, it is just a question of "do you want to squirrel this guy away to steal him".

I wouldnt mind us taking a flyer on some hard throwing reliever, but I can't see any other option. We dont really need another utility player and our OF is pretty full (assuming Cutch comes back).

Machin doesn’t really do anything great. He’s limited at shortstop and as a fringe-average runner, he doesn’t have much value as a pinch runner. But he is a lefthanded hitting utility infielder who can play all four infield spots to varying degrees of ability and he hit .295/.390/.412 for Triple-A Iowa last year. He likely won’t be picked, but he’s a better hitter than a few of the players who will be picked.

Seems to be a high OBP, poor defensive middle infielder. Not really what we need so if this turns into an international allocation that would be perfect.

Odd. With so many teams taking a pass it's not as if there appeared to be competition to take him that would benefit another team to trade for him. Unless of course there is a team that is so cheap that having the Phils spend $50k on a guy is more valuable to them than the ability to spend $250k internationally.

Hmm. He's a utility infielder type. He's arguably better than anything we have in the minors to fill that role on the ML roster (e.g., Jose Gomez, Jose Antequera). They're going to have to have another infielder on the 26-man roster (in addition to Kingery, Gregorius, Segura), and it's not likely to be Arquimedes Gamboa. They'll have to clear a roster spot for that infielder, so perhaps there's little reason not to clear that roster spot now.

Not to say that they won't try to upgrade the reserve infielder spot, but hanging on to Machin until they do could make sense.

Oh, and there's also Roman Quinn, who could (arguably) serve as a reserve infielder - of course, putting Quinn in the middle infield is an invitation to the EMTs....
