For Moniak and a lower-tier AAA arm I’d certainly be in on Benintendi. I like the idea of an all-Andrew platoon in left.

Roster is already at 40 before Bradley so someone needs to go (and we'll probably need at least 2 more spots absent trade for a catcher and a shortstop). Candidates to drop:

Victor Arano - Stuff has never come back, though still young and inexpensive
David Hale - Should have been a non tender?
Ian Hamilton - waiver pickup who throws hard
Cole Irvin - could he slip through waivers to AAA?
Johan Quezada - Another waiver pickup
Cristopher Sanchez - Minor deal only pitched OK in winter ball
Kyle Holder - Rule 5 pick
Kyle Garlick - extra OF who did not hit in limited time last year.

Absent trades 3 or 4 of these players probably need to go before Spring Training. They will still need to bring a few more pitchers in on minor league deals. If JT does not resign the new catcher could come in that way. They will get more spots when the 60-day DL becomes live when Dominguez goes on there and anyone else that is hurt that we don't know about yet.

DJ LeMahieu re-upped with the yankees for 6 year/90 million dollars. At 32 this is a fairly long deal but the money isn't huge.

I wonder what this may mean for Realmuto in terms of years...

Looks like that deal was purposely stretched longer to make the AAV hit smaller. That of course could come back to haunt them in the last couple of years of the deal, though it is also possible the luxury tax limit will be $50 million higher by then.

One assumes a pitcher will go for now, and Garlick will go if and when they add an OF (unless Moniak, Haseley or Quinn are involved in a trade).

Still hard to imagine Holder sticking if they do sign a SS and keep Segura. Of course finding a way to offload Segura would also open a spot, though not if $ was also coming back.

Dombrowski and his wife had lunch with JT and his wife on December 23. Spent about 90 minutes together and did not talk contract/money during this meeting. Dombrowski's wife is from Oklahoma and they were visiting family there over Christmas season.

Stark states that the Phillies seem to have become the favorite to sign JT.

Kind of an interesting move, they could just park him in AAA or on the bench but it also possibly telegraphs plans to either trade Segura or play Kingery in CF. Or they view him as exclusively a shortstop which gives the more options next year too.

HIgh average hitter. Seems decent defensively. Not much power, speed, or patience though so looks like a utility guy at best. With this guy and the rule 5 pick one has to wonder if they are setting themselves up with mediocre options if they choose not to sign one of the better shortstops.

I am sure he was just going to be a DFA, so the price is going to be only slightly more than a waiver claim, but one really has to ask why they got this guy if they are going to get a regular shortstop later. Arano was going to be one of the winter DFAs. Now they will need another one potentially.

Also he has dropped precipitously in the rankings. Not on the Fangraphs top 46 and 36th at prospects1500:

Chatham has arguably had the most precipitous fall in the calendar year under the new baseball ops regime. After a strong showing at the Premier 12 tournament and high minors in 2019, Chatham earned a 40-man roster spot. But he didn’t debut in 2020 despite a 2B job for the taking, as he was passed over by Arauz, Bloom favorite Christian Arroyo (former top prospect and Tampa Bay Ray) and super utility man Yairo Muñoz. On this particular date, Chatham remains the most MLB ready SS depth on the 40-man, so hope remains for the sure fielding infielder to contribute in Boston.

With the RS needing to replace Pedroia at 2B, if this guy was much of a prospect, they would have kept him.
