Walker and a 5th round pick to the Avs for a 2025 protected 1st round pick (shifts to 2026 if in the top 10) and Ryan Johanson. Johanson is being put on waivers right away, so it seems we're intending to flip him or send him to Lehigh Valley. He’s got a $4 million cap hit with one more year on his contract.

Yeah they are probably eating the $ to get the 1st instead of a 2nd, but he still makes $8,000,000 next year so one way or another more to come. Spotrac says 8,000,000 is also his cap hit, is there a better source?

Got the 1st rd pick for Walker. That is a win IMO.

Johanson would have been decent 8 years ago, but is cooked now, but whatever you need to do to get the pick.

It looks like they are going to resign Seeler (hopefully for short term and small $) and I do not get a sense Laughton or anyone else is being seriously shopped. Walker was the one they needed to get done. Hopefully, they can work on moving Risto during the off-season.

Played for Torts in CBJ, provides veteran center depth, could allow Laughton to move to LW this season, and maybe be traded this summer. Has slipped a bit, but might get a short-term bounce with change of scenery.

Also 2026 5th to Colorado.

Flyers have (2) 1sts, 2nd in 2024 draft, (2) 1sts, (3) 2nds in 2025 draft (CBJ sure to move the 2024 2nd rd pick to 2025).

That could be the reality, but they need that cap space to maximize flexibility

They could buy out Johansen or flip him in the summer. If they pick up some of his salary then they only have one slot left for Risto or Atkinson. Who knows if he'll play for the Flyers this year. But yeah he may be a "Torts guy" too.

I don't think there's a limit on buyouts, so they could buyout Atkinson, Peterson and Johansen.

They waived johanson, if he clears they can pay him to be in the AHL and it’s not a cap hit. Same for Peterson. If someone gets bought out is it for less money? I know that’s how it works in the NBA - but if you’re going to pay them in full what’s the downside of keeping them in the AHL instead of buying them out and having the dead money on the cap?

Any player on an AHL roster with an AAV of over $1.075 million and on a one-way contract will be counted towards the cap as well

This is what the Caps just did with Kuznetsov sending him to Hershey. They get $1.075 off the cap while he is there. Might give them room to maneuver around the trade deadline if they want to pick up additional salary from another team to improve the draft capital they get back in a deal.

It is definitely a loophole in the salary cap rules that lets a team spend a bit more money if they have a player with a big contract not playing up to that contract.

Haha I hear you. But he won't be third-pair D the first two years. And it turns out the deal was on the low end. Granted this is not MLB but extra years with less production are still a given with most contract.

And blocking shots isn't an intangible!

Buyouts let you spread out the cap hit but don't free you of it.

At some point they will also do something with Ryan Ellis.

Blocking shots isn’t intangible, but toughness and tenacity are. He’s also willing to be in a scrap when needed. Everything Risto was acquired to be and isn’t.

Yah but VFK is saying he thinks intangibles are overrated (as they were with David Bell). A fairytale, even. Something you don't want to overpay for. Whereas I'm saying blocking shots is a tangible illustration of toughness and tenacity, not just fuzzy leadership or chemistry factors.

But this criticism would have been based on the Flyers overpaying for intangibles (as they did for Risto). Given the apparent final number, if not the fourth year, I don't think they did.

Chychrun doesn’t seem to make sense unless they are willing to sign him after next season when he’s probably due a raise. I suppose Atkinson’s money will be available one way or another. But TK will be a UFA and both Foerster and York could be in line for a payday as well.
