I don't think Briere would make this kind of move before using #6, if you take Martone, no interest, if you take Hagens/Frondell, hmmm.

Interesting read on Roger McQueen, a 6' 5" center, who would probably be in the top three prospects if he didn't have a back injury that limited him to 17 games in his draft year. Craig Button comps him to Ryan Getzlaf. They took a risk on Michkov and it paid off, maybe at 6 you take the risk here to get a player that if healthy would not have been available at 6 but could really pay off.

Not saying they should say no and these two have little to do with each other, isn’t that how we talked ourselves into Nolan Patrick? Don’t get me wrong, at the time Patrick was the right choice and didn’t work out, i recall he couldn’t stay healthy his draft year. I wonder if there is any franchise baggage where they feel they need to be less risky with this pick.

Aye, his upside can't be much more than someone else at 6 who has no injury concern. Michkov wasn't an injury concern, just an availability one.

McQueen is the kind of player you monitor and see if he drops, once he gets to #15 or later, consider packing #22 with a current player or prospect to move up. But not at #6.

There's a group of players who'll go from 3-6:
Hagens, Frondell, Martone, Desnoyers, Eklund, O'Brien.

It's an average draft, but the strongest position is center, the Flyers biggest need, center.
Also should have a number of good goalie prospects in the late 1st and 2nd rd.

That would be a realistic expectation...an improved PP and some league average goalie play and you're in the post season...which is a nice step forward after the years fans have suffered through...

I have not seen Eklund always go Top 10 in mocks. Is that the guy you might trade up to get at 13 or 14? Or, down if you can get him at 8 or 9?

Eklund and Frondell were both elite scorers in Allsvenskan at 17, which like being a top KHL goalie under 20 (Zavragin), generally translates to top NHL success.

Martin is getting hyped, but I don't see it, physical center but he's not huge and not a great scorer.

Desnoyers is tricky, two way center, but Q is weakest CHL league, looked good in POs, not so good in Memorial Cup.

Martone is safe pick, less upside but fewer questions about transition (held his own with NHL players in a couple WC games).

O'Brien another tricky pick, going to be big, but how will he play when he fills out. Real nice numbers at 17.

Flyer prospect to watch next season, Spencer Gill. RHD who was 6'4 186 when drafted a year ago, now supposedly up to 215 lbs. High ankle injury cost him the rest of the season and a deep PO run. August B-day, so will play his D+2 season at 19. Should make Canada W-20 team. A pick based on upside as a late B-day with a big frame and good skill package.

I think at one point Wheeler wrote that the word of mouth he was hearing suggested Eklund was going to fall. But that doesn't seem to have stuck.

It seems like at 6th it's still not really that tricky. Either there are going to be two guys they want most left and they will pick between them, or even just one. Beyond that, you consider trading down a few spots if you like what you can do as a result (both the player you take and the trade). And they may or may not still draft for position (C vs. W) if it's close.

there is also a chance one of the guys at the top falls down to the flyers...there seems to always be one that does.

I would be thrilled with Frondell at 6.

Hagens could also slip to 6 but that is very unlikely.

FWIW, I like McQueen. Not sure about top 3 as he likely wouldn't break a lot of peoples top 2, so that puts him directly at #3. Still, a fractured back at 17 years old is more risk than I'd like with a #6 pick.

I've seen some mocks with Eklund falling to the teens. It's definitely possible. NHL prefers centers and generally bigger players. Then again, that is exactly how the Flyers got TK.
