Ha, I wasn't really thinking that, just that it would be better to have two picks in '26 and two this year (if they don't find a move-up or expansion deal that works for this draft) but also that would give them more leeway to bid on an RFA and still have a first (and if the Flyers are actually out of the lottery that pick wouldn't necessarily be terribly worse than their own).

Martin is intriguing, he would be loved in Philadelphia because he is such a tornado on the ice. Very physical for a center with skill. If he was a little bigger, he'd be a top pick. I don't think he goes that high though, he's in the 9-10 range in most mocks.

Wheeler is just especially high on him, but also seems to be suggesting the mocks are based more on what his status was until people saw him at the Worlds. If you are the Flyers and want him do you just do it risk trading down.

Seems like anything could happen 2-5 in any case.

Briere can target players at every point in the first two rounds, except the top 5.
So that gives him a lot of options, and he'll be getting a lot of phone calls.
And one of York/Andrae/Zamula is likely to be traded this summer as well (b/c Grans is NHL ready, Risto returns in Nov and Bonk is unlikely to spend the season in LHV).

I don't think Rossi is what they're looking for at center, the fact he was demoted in the playoffs suggests he struggles with physical play and tough forechecking. He's listed at 5'9 182. Would have to be sheltered in certain situations. He does have above average speed and burst, but he's not an elite skater.

He turned down a 5/5 offer from the Wild during the season. Just entering his first RFA season, so that was a pretty good offer.

They also would want to see what the draft brings, they're not going to make a big money commitment to a center if they draft one at #6.

I think they'd be interested at the right price, but they're not going to overpay in terms of picks/prospects or money,

This would make sense if they were a team in the need of only one center.

The Flyers need several.

They have Jett, Couts, Cates and Poehling.
Berglund in Allsvenskan, should start in SHL next season.
Gaucher will probably move to RW, Rizzo lost a season to surgery in August, never really bounced back.

They'll probably add a center or two later in the draft this summer.
So the need is really top 6.

Rossi is more a middle six center who is top six offensively, but has to be sheltered at times.
He's better offensively than Cates or Couts, but not as good on defense.

Again...you are pretty much on an island of your own with building through the draft...that's not how successful teams build...

Using all these picks has almost no chance of building a winner any time in the near future.

I think you’re getting a little carried away in your argument. All of these draft picks certainly are helpful and do nothing to prevent an offer sheet or free agent signing. And the picks certainly can help the Flyers down the road with roster development in all sorts of ways. The key is to build through the draft and supplement with free agents, offer sheets, prospect trades, etc.
