As now structured this is a clearly good trade for the Phils. Immediate upgrade at SS and 1B, opens an OF slot they can fill in free agency. I liked Carlos Santana, wish him all the luck in the world.

I will withhold judgement of this trade until I find out which young Phillie prospect [and I believe there will be one] goes to the Mariners. As much as I liked the Hunter Pence deal in 2011 I admit I liked it less when the final shoe dropped...Dominic Santana was included in the deal as the PTBNL.

I am also trying hard not to go through the daily mood swings of agony/ecstasy with regards to potential Phillies trades and free agent signings as I will wait till its pretty much completed before casting my silent vote yay or nay.

I will say this...after hearing for so many years about how the team was financially gearing up for this off season to sign either Harper or Machado I do think most Phillie phans will be greatly disappointed if neither one is wearing a red Phillie cap come next spring.

Which will make the upcoming talk of Trout in 2021 seem quite hollow indeed.

I wonder what Patrick Corbin thinks of Jean Segura as a SS. This possibly was in the calculus of the trade decision. It also could be a random coincidence that they were teammates.

It's a very impressive trade if no reasonably good prospect is also going back the other way. Or, in our negativity and disappointment, we were significantly undervaluing Crawford and Santana, i.e. the M's are still getting a potential cornerstone SS for years to come, and an above-average everyday major leaguer (who can also DH for them).

But this is also the joy of the salary dump. Nicasio isn't cheap, so taking him back is the equivalent of paying almost half Santana's salary. He can't make the team if he pitches like he did last year but he's a reliever so a return to form is more than possible.

ED...no, not at all. In fact I am optimistic about what may transpire because I am a huge Middleton phan and think he will almost demand that things get done. Just trying to not get ahead of myself here...I did that in July when I went to bed on Monday night [the night before the All Star game] reading that Machado to the Phillies was pretty much a done deal and then being stunned when I woke up on Tuesday morning and read that the Dodgers were now the favorites to get him...and did.

As hard as it is to admit, I had a hard time following the Phillies from then on...and for my sanity its probably wise that I didn't, given their atrocious last 40 games [12-28!]

Look at how long it took for the Sixers' Butler trade to become official and the Cano-Diaz to Mets trade. The times we live in. I would not be surprised if we end up not hearing anything official until Wednesday at the earliest.

I guess the odd part is that its difficult to figure out which way the balance of the trade is going to tilt without knowing the other names.

Can't say I remember anyone ever reporting it was a done deal. Always seemed like rumors, and the rumored package never seemed real.

I guess there are probably some Padres fans still stunned they didn't get Segura and Leake too.

So, Segura becomes the every day SS and Hoskins moves back to 1B. As PC said, that opens up the LF position which one seems to fit Harper best.

We'll see how they handle the Franco/Hernandez/Kingery issue next, but this looks like a good deal for the team and a good way to use our financial advantage to take on salary.

I'm still more on getting Machado instead of Harper, but that does not seem to align with the strategy these moves reflect. I hope the best for Crawford who I think got a raw deal here for whatever reason.

The Segura deal shows the value of money even if you don't land a big name.
A year of Santana, then use him as part of a flip, picking up a quality starter at the cost of an underachieving prospect.

You can use money to help other GMs rectify their mistakes, picking up players and prospects simply by eating money.
That of course, was the Hinkie special.

Very encouraging so far. Santana wasn't a poor player, just not the best 1B the Phillies had. I think Crawford will do well. Nice that Segura is pumped to come here. Nice that TPTB realized Kingery isn't a SS. Let's get Machado for 3B now. It will be interesting to see what our pitchers can do with a better D behind them.

I'd like to see the deal expanded to include Kyle Seager and Mitch Haniger. Maybe for Franco and a prospect, and the Phils picking up most of the rest of Seager's contract. Then sign Machado to play short and move Segura to second.
