It isn't a bad draft for forwards, which the Flyers are in need of in the system, but there are only two impact players at the top of the draft and the Flyers can get one of them. It would be foolish IMHO to pass that up.

I think trading the 16+ million left on the McDonald contract is a big deal as well...

The MacDonald contract is not a big issue, Flyers have plenty of cap room, no big signings for a couple of years and Hextall has shown little interest in FAs. If he wants to get rid of MacDonald he can eat half the contract this year or next, Flyers would still realize a net cap gain - and eating half the contract would make him tradeable with say a small sweetener. This is the man who dumped Vinnie!

The only reason Hextall trades #2 is a Godfather offer.

McDonald can always be kept in the minors where his salary does not count against the salary cap. Not worth giving up #2 to get him off the books.

His salary still counts in the AHL, but htey get a little more than a $1M a year relief.

So:
On roster $5M the next three years
Traded - $2.5M the next three years
Minors - $4M the next three years
Buyout - spread over next six years

Odds are Hextall will just carry MacDonald this year if he can't dump him, and then trade him next year, taking half the contract and throwing in a mid-round draft pick.

Dumping MacDonald is worth at best a 3rd rd pick to Hextall, which has little impact on a trade of this magnitude.

Remember, Flyers will lose one contract in the ED, then $8M next year when Filpulla and Read leave.
So they don't need to dump MacDonald's salary.

I know you like to debate details but getting the 3 picks and clearing more cap space for greater flexibility are very nice incentives. It's good to see a GM address multiple things at the same time.

Awesome. He was the guy I was hoping for. Power forward to go with this lineup and we are really starting to get somewhere.

Hopefully we can find a better goalie to pair with Stolarz and move on from Mason and Neuvy.

I hated loosing Bellemare but I would rather keep Laughton just based on age.

Me neither. Honestly, I really think we won this one, of course only time will tell and both guys could be great, but this is the guy I wanted. Part of that is of course just liking power players better.

There really wasnt a negative word about either guy.

I don't think it's a matter of which player is better, just different styles.
I think Nico will end up a 80-90 point scorer who isn't a defensive liability.
I think Patrick will end up a 30-30 guy who puts up big +/- numbers as a great two way center and physical presence.
The key is Rubtsov becoming the fast, skilled center to go with Patrick and Couts, with Vorobyov as the 4th line center.
If that happens the next couple years, you have the core of a forward group for a long time.

Flyers trade Braden Schenn to get back into the back of the first round at pick 27 to draft Morgan Frost, C. I think that means that Patrick will be on the Flyers this year and Lindblom should also make the team.

Edit: The Flyers also received from the Blues Jori Lehtera and a conditional 2018 first round pick. The conditions on the pick, if it falls in the top 10 picks, then the Flyers would receive a 2019 first round and a 2019 third round pick.

Seems like something bigger may be on deck. Lehtera is not very good and on a bad contract. You would think they could get more for a young player who is getting better each season without a killer cap hit.

Lehtera is lost in St Louis, but he was a ppg his last two KHL seasons, and had 37 ES points in his first year in St Louis.
He was included as a salary dump, but there's enough there to gamble you can turn his career around for his next two seasons.

The condition is if it's a top 10 pick, St Louis can move it to 2019, if again a top 10 pick, they can move it to 2020 by giving up a 2020 3rd rd pick.

Schenn was a first rate PP scorer who was llimited at ES, Hextall may have felt his value had peaked and wanted to move him before the league figured that out.

As for the 2018 pick, if it falls in the top 10, St. Louis has the option to defer to its 2019 first-round pick. If the Blues decide to do so, as a result, the Flyers also receive St. Louis' third-round pick in 2020.
