Tall lefty, Duke's closer with a Chris Sale like arm action, 90-94. He was lights out as a freshman, got hit as a sophomore (here's DiMartini rocking him for a homer), and good again as a Junior.

At this point the best players available are going to be college arms so might as well keep the run going and grab a catcher or two for them to play with.

Wow! Why not, at this point, right? With as much as they’ve been linked to him, I have to think they know what it’ll take to sign him and plan to do it.

I could see 100-200k off of Wood's bonus, maybe $700k off of Obermuller, 100-200k off of Boyker, and $400k off of the combined bonuses for Youngerman and Craig, so something in the neighborhood of 1.5 million plus the 250k slot value.

I wonder if they wanted to risk waiting until the 11th but heard that some other team wanted him earlier.

I have to imagine he will be signed and the savings planned in the early rounds were going to ensure getting him or another HS flier signed. I suspect the amount will be large ($2 million plus).

I did not realize there was a Mattingly connection to his HS (Don went there). Has to help in getting him signed.

Preston also went to the same high school. I think that is very relevant in the Phillies being certain to sign the kid.

I read it as having some connections in the community to understand the kid's interest, not "hey, his dad is Don Mattingly"!
