At this rate, we'll be taking a team manager in the 13th and the Study Hall proctor in the 14th. How the heck did we not save any money with a 30 pick reach in the first round and only one other HS player taken in the first 10 rounds?
I think we are definitely seeing the effect of NIL money on signing high school picks. This was supposedly a mediocre high school class to begin with, but I think we are seeing players that cannot get a $500K bonus go to college. Remember if they can get $150K-$200K of NIL money for 3 years its a better deal because supposedly they are getting an education too in the bargain.
I would not be surprised if our 2 HS picks to begin the draft are our only HS picks.
looks like only the angels took a flyer on a hard to sign high schooler in the 11th round, most of the "best available" are still available after 3 additional rounds today
Wilson had a decent amount of strikeouts but looks like the stats show some control issues
In the 13th Round of the whatever, the Philadelphia Phillies select:
Tegan Cain, RHP, University of Kansas, Junior
How soon till we start picking the kids of our scouts?
yep squire, I'm out too. What used to be an exciting 3 days is coming up a disappointment. looks like they did use most if not all of their allotted 10 round money. No savings.
Really looks like this draft will have no Mavis Graves and Emaairion Boyd and Kehden Hettiger type picks. I know they are all longshots, but they also seem good bets on the odd $500K or so it would take to sign them.
will any of these kids be listed in the top 30 prospects lists? that's my final post on this subject.gm
Boyd is 16 and Hettiger is 21 on the current MLB list. Graves is having the best season of the 3 so he will likely be on the list this offseason.
Whatever, Phillies pick in the 14th Round was:
Jared Spencer, LHP, Indiana State, Jr.
BA #194
It was really hard to read over and under slot yesterday (as I mentioned in my recap). I have suspicions that Camron Hill and Marcus Morgan will be overslot for the 8th and 9th round. Both of those arms and profiles look much better than those rounds. I also think it might go back to the first pick and it not being much underslot or underslot at all. In 2021, Barber only saved a small amount for the 11th round that was then used on Andrew Baker, so he doesn't always save money. Not many people saved money this year it looks like either.
15th Round, Phillies select:
Luke Gabrysh, RHP, St. Joseph's University, Junior
I’m sure they must have picked one before , but that’s nuts! Wonder if he lasts longer than Tyler Mach did.
Titan Hayes- high 90’s fastball, also possibly a 35 year old professional wrestler.
16th Round Phillies pick:
Eli Trop, RHP, University of Pennsylvania, Senior
Not to belabor the point, but there is something really strange about their draft. It just doesn’t track - almost like they let their computer make the pics this year in the way that someone searches for advice when asking for “a great home builder that’s cheap!”
Easily the most uninteresting draft of the Barber era.
We are in contention for the Big 5 title next year though if everyone returns to grad school.
17th Round Phillies take:
Ryan Degges, RHP, UNC Charlotte, Junior
BA #490
Cheap Phillies will make him share an Uber with the 12th rounder
