ST GDT 2/22/19 Phils vs Rays

We have baseball... and the Phils scored in their first inning of their first game.

Dont they usually start by playing some college team, or did I miss that game.

Yeah clearly they didn't do that this year. That might have been an Amaro relationship that lingered (you may recall his nephew played for them, and was then drafted by us).

Game is being broadcast on 94 WIP and, so I can listen up here in NY, via the MLB-At-Bat app. (Did I mention that $20 for the radio feed is the best money I spend every year?) Great to hear Franzke and LA and Frandsen (3 man booth) back in action.

Cole Irvin started on the mound, threw two scoreless innings.

Per LA, the Phils run in the first came on a triple from Scott Kingery, who scored on a throwing error.

In the top of third (Poche pitching), the Phils' first three hitters (Cozens, Listi), and Quinn) reached to load the bases. Kingery hit a pop fly to center for the first out. Franco worked a walk to force in a run, to make it 2-0 Phillies. Nick Williams struck out on three pitches. Rays change pitchers (Pinto) to face Andrew Knapp, who got behind 0-2, then worked the count full, but grounded out 4-3.

Choi the first batter to face Brown, lines to left, caught by Williams for the second out. The throw in is cut off, Robertson scores, it's 2-1 Phillies.
Diaz strikes out to end the threat.

Romine's a 33 year-old middle infielder signed to a minor league deal with an invitation to ST - one of 22 non-roster invitees in camp this spring.

Game day is in spring training mode, not showing all pitches in most at bat summaries. Strike outs will show 3 strikes. Walks 4 balls. Most balls in play will be shown as on first pitch. This is the same as past seasons.

However, on Franco’s home run, it shows earlier pitches and it shows a called strike on the pitch where Cozens stole a base.

Game was at Port Charlotte.

Drive from the Phillies complex is about a hundred miles. Google maps says it can be done in just under two hours.

Looks like a box score from last year. We do a good job of getting on base but have a hard time actually getting hits.

Obviously not taking anything away from this game, just thought it was interesting.

Listened to most of the game on radio with my MLB at bat subscription. Good to hear Larry Anderson again. Can anyone tell me who the other announcer was? Didn’t recognize his voice. I only listened between entertaining my two granddaughters.

True, but to be fair to Franco, he did walk to produce a run and continue the threat.
