I miss slightly expanded rosters. I would be content with even 4 added players as a way to either reward older players who have paid there dues and been helpful for years, but may not ever get called up to a normal 26 man roster or a chance to expose a minor leaguer to the show before he makes the team the next spring.
I was never a fan of teams bring up 10-12 extra players and then playing them in games which may effect the playoff odds of other teams.

Rosters are slightly expanded. The active roster has been expanded from 26 to 28, effective September 1st. Further, clubs are required to add two players as of September 1st. The limit on pitchers on the active roster increased on September 1st, from 13 to 14.

This does mean that it's unlikely that somebody will be added to the active roster just as a "reward" - i.e., to get them a bit more money (or service time) in return for years of marginal service (or because they're the GM's nephew). In the case of a particularly caring organization, this may be something of a loss. In the multiple cases of organizations that are run by jerks, on the other hand, it requires them to elevate a couple of players.

I think the Phillies were partly responsible for the rule change when one year they literally had their entire 40 man roster up at the end of Sept.

The other issue was teams using 12 pitchers in a game.

I would love to see 32.. but each game they have to announce which 22 are available for that game (26-the 4 other SPs)

So before the game you announce your starting lineup and SP. Thats 10. Your 7 bullpen members. Your 5 bench players.

There was definitely a competitive disadvantage when rich teams like the Phillies were using 40 players and poor teams like the Marlins were using 27.

It's something that MLB and the MLBPA negotiated as part of the CBA. I can believe that neither side in the negotiations got exactly what they wanted...that's the nature of negotiations..

At the core is MLBPA got the 26th roster spot and MLB cut September to 28. If the average number of previous September call ups averaged to 7 months of service time (remember guys would get called up after the AAA season which was shorter than now, but did go into September) than the amount of MLB service time gained stayed the same. Also September now counts for service time for ROY which I am not sure how that works out other than making ROY eligibility easier to calculate.

He has really had a mediocre year stepping up to AA, but the Austin Hays injury that called up Cal Stevenson is getting Marcus Lee Sang his first AAA appearance.
