So I wonder if Derek Hall is just the move in a few days for someone else or they are not going to add "another bat".

Right now, Sands is the additional bat. Maybe they will shuffle some players on the 40 man roster up and down to the active roster spot. Hall, Munoz, and Camargo seem to be the most likely to be in the shuffle in September.

Also likely that there will be some shuffling of pitchers as well.

I think Camargo's Phillies career is probably over. And they can't really shuffle that much (without injuries). But that's probably why Sands got this first call, they don't mind that once he's sent down he likely won't be coming back.

The only reason they would really need Sands back after they send him down is for a catching injury and that move would be allowed. Hope it does not happen of course. They might choose Marchan too if they had an injury.

Was I just not paying attention or did they sweep the firing of Jason Ochart under the rug? I had great hope for him, but after 4 years it's hard to say there was any appreciable improvement in the system.

Pitching development is objectively on an upward trend.

The stories pitched it as Mattingly inevitably getting his person in that job. Hard to say his results were good of course. We seem to be having the most success with the guys that profile as AAAA players (Vierling, Hall, Guthrie) rather than huge improvements from supposedly top hitting prospects. We definitely hit a phase last season of some players hitting way too many groundballs though I think that has stopped and may have been more a major league problem that bled over into AAA.

I guess one can point to Hao Yu Lee as a lower minors success, but he has really hit since he stepped into Clearwater so not really sure it was the coaching.

They certainly didn't announce it as a firing. Plus, he never left Driveline to begin with. But yes, seemed like just a natural, if delayed, change from having a new boss, as well as there being a new hitting coach in the majors.

They were early on the pitching side with the hiring of Brian Kaplan, who explicitly works for both the major league team and in development, so I wonder if we'll actually see something like that on the hitting side now too, some kind of point person who splits his time between assisting Long and assisting Ochart's replacement.
