ROY TANNER SELECTED AS 2016 DALLAS GREEN AWARD WINNER
Phillies Professional Scout Roy Tanner has been selected as the 2016 recipient of the Dallas Green Award, the club announced today.
Tanner, who has spent 44 years in professional baseball, including 27 with the Phillies, was named to his current position in 2009, following 19 seasons as an area scout covering the Carolinas and other southern states.
“To be honored with such a prestigious award, bearing Dallas’ name, is just priceless,” said Tanner. “This organization has meant so much to me over the years. I just want to thank Dallas and the Phillies for this honor.”
A former utility specialist, Tanner played six professional seasons in the Kansas City Royals minor league system, appearing in games at second base, third base, catcher and outfield from 1972-77. Tanner also served as a player/coach towards the end of his playing career.
The 2016 Dallas Green Award will be presented on the field on September 15, prior to the 7:05 p.m. game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The award was established in 2011 to honor the accomplishments of Green, who has spent 62 years in professional baseball, 46 of which have been with the Phillies.
The award is presented annually to an amateur or professional scout who best exemplifies the Phillies standard for scouting while demonstrating the same loyalty, work ethic, dedication and passion as the award’s namesake. It is also recognition of the scout’s ability to judge not only a player’s talent, but also his character and heart.
Past winners of the Dallas Green Award include Dick Lawlor (2011), Bill Harper (2012), Eddie Bockman (2013), Gordon Lakey (2014) and Sal Agostinelli (2015).
