RIP Doc. One of my favorite pitchers of all time. His no hitter in the playoffs was the most dominating game I ever saw, he honestly could have gone another 5 innings and they still would not have gotten a hit.

I would think in this case flying his own plane was the point, it wasn't for convenience. No less tragic for it, but makes perfect sense that such an intense player would enjoy that kind of risk/adventure.

Horrible news. Very risky hobby, private aviation, but, honestly, the people who do it know the risks and are comfortable taking those risks. I have a very good friend who flies all the time in the New England area, says it's a matter of luck, often, that determines whether you get back safely. Don't know how she continues to fly with that on her mind...

Anyway, RIP, Roy, you were the best.

terrible news. he was only a phil for 4 years but was loved like a lifer in philly. in the above mentioned article, the plane had a parachute. had to have been a low flying accident. very tough to hear.

That or else a landing gone bad. The plane was an amphib - capable of landing on water, but water landings bring added risk - from random waves, from debris, etc. The plane was found upside down - could have flipped over during an attempted landing.

Very sad, in any case.

Can't help but think of the strange fates that await baseball players, talent often be damned. Charlie Morton has been an oft times mediocre pitcher who decided a couple of years ago to emulate Roy Halladay so much so that he even decided to use almost the same wind up that Halladay used.

Halladay was one of the greatest pitchers of this era who left with one unfulfilled goal...to pitch a World Series game. Morton, on the other hand, a guy who decided to become a Roy Halladay-lite a few years ago just won the final game of the 2017 World Series and I remember thinking that night that Halladay must have watched the game with some feelings of irony and regret given his yeoman like work ethic and will to win.

Words do no justice at this time except to say we were all blessed and honored to have witnessed such an amazing period as the 2007-2011 Phillie Era and no one honored and blessed us more than Roy Halladay.

Rest well, my friend, you will always be remembered, emulated...and missed.

A day after a plane crash took the life of ex-MLB star pitcher Roy Halladay, witnesses have come forward to say they saw the accident and Halladay was flying erratically.

Video obtained by TMZ Sports shows Halladay, 40, making big changes in altitude as he flew around the Gulf of Mexico — not far from his home in Tarpon Springs, Florida. He’d fly up to 100 feet in the air, according to TMZ, then down to a few feet above the water. TMZ termed it “showboating.”

The video portrays witnesses, who are watching from a boat, as surprised by Halladay’s flying pattern to the point that they’re saying “What the [expletive]?” as they watch. As Halladay’s plane flew up and down, one of the men in the videos said, “That can’t be legal.”

I am in Toronto this week for work and just saw a news report on this form of kindness.

Doc had a luxury Box in Toronto for years that he had sick and troubled kids use. When he was not able to welcome the kids into the box because he was pitching that day apparently his wife and sons filled in.

A Boston radio talk show host says Halladay "got what he deserved."

His point is that Halladay was being selfish by doing something so dangerous. I wish I could say I'm surprised, but I'm not. I'm just sad. To say something like this, which is likely to get back to Halladay's family, is awful, especially so soon after his death. I can't imagine someone having a public forum being that insensitive. What would he say if it was, say, his own son?
