I hate the Hall for cancelling 2020. It seemed obviously this could happen (whether to Allen or someone else), especially with COVID in the mix.

My favorite Phillies player when I was in high school (and quite a while beyond). A serious shame he wasn't already admitted to HOF. Just a super offensive talent.

Unfortunately, I never saw him play. A bit before my time. Been reading all these articles about him, though. He must have been a really special player to watch! RIP

Sad Sad news. i know i think I have posted this on site before and i know i had mentioned to CD when he was writing his book. i saw a few of "Richie's" shots over the Coca Cola sign, on the roof, in left field at Commie Mack. They were in night games and it was awesome seeing the small white ball disappear into the dark sky. i also witnessed a laser shot, when he came back to the phillies in the 70's. it was against the reds and he hit a tracer into he left field seats. probably the fastest ball i have ever seen leave the park. it was a shame what happened to him as a Phillie. i remember a little about the Frank Thomas incident and what happened afterward. CD would probably remember more that I, but it was too bad. Richie played in tough times in Philly. he was fast ( a lot of doubles and triples), tremendous athlete and a great hitter. i don't know much of the old Phils and certainly know of Schmidt's career, but you could get an argument from me to put Allen in consideration for the best player in phils history. tough to hear.

He won the first game I ever attended at Connie Mack with an extra innings Home Run. He also hit a massive pop-up earlier in the game that my 10 year old memory has preserved as possibly leaving the atmosphere. I actually was more wide-eyed amazed with that out than I was with the homer. RIP and thank you for the memory!

He was also my favorite player. Among the rockets he would hit, I remember his incredibly broad shoulders and narrow waist. Also that he used a 40 oz. bat.

It's cool to see how much everyone loved him, and also kind of surprising. Though not really, I guess - overall this board has generally supported good players through media, manager or team-manufactured "controversies" and soap operas.

I only got to see him the second time around, and until I got older was more familiar with his so-called reputation than the magic of his play.
