Third baseman Pedro Feliz signed a two-year contract with the Phillies with a club option for 2010, Assistant General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today. The contract is for a guaranteed $8.5 million, plus performance and awards bonuses.
“We said from the beginning of our off-season that we would try to improve the club in any way we could,” said Amaro. “We feel that with the acquisition of Feliz, we have helped to solidify an already productive infield. Pedro is an above average defender who will provide some overall balance to our lineup.”
Feliz, 32, batted .253 with 20 home runs and 72 RBI in 150 games, his fourth straight season with at least 20 homers. With runners in scoring position, he batted .310, which included a .393 clip in his final 48 games. Feliz’ .973 fielding percentage was the best among all National League third basemen last season and his 11 errors were third-fewest among those with at least 300 total chances.
Over the last five seasons (2003-07), Feliz had the most RBI (383) among all Giants players and was second only to Barry Bonds in home runs (100).
A native of the Dominican Republic, Feliz was originally signed by San Francisco as an amateur free agent in 1994. He has a career batting average of .252 with 109 home runs and 418 RBI in 874 games.
