Sorry, but maybe not sorry. Trump is 77 years old, overweight, sedentary, showing signs of dementia. His days are numbered. (Well, all of our days are numbered, but some of us at least try to take care of ourselves.) To my mind, the United States and the world would be better off if Trump departs tonight, rather than 6 or 7 years from now. Nothing cruel about it, I don't think. What is he going to contribute in those 6 or 7 years, as opposed to damaging? Publicly? Privately? Does he even play with his grandchildren?
Is it cruel and spiteful to think that the world would be a better place if Vladimir Putin succumbed to some disease this week, as opposed to continuing his rule for another decade? Is Donald Trump more redeemable than Putin?
As for your political argument, allentown... I don't care. Jazzhead argues that we all just want Trump to be the nominee, because Biden can beat him. I'm not in that camp, whatever Jazzhead may believe (or choose to argue). Trump is an existential danger; Nikki Haley is not.
If the Republicans were to nominate a Haley (or equivalent) and subsequently win the Presidency and control of Congress... well, Americans would get what they voted for, whether or not they understood what they were voting for. I wouldn't agree with the policies, but somehow, I don't see Nikki Haley trying to cancel the 2028 election, or eliminate the two-term limit on a Presidency, or otherwise trying to suspend the Constitution, or using the Justice Department (and Homeland Security) to go after political rivals, to seek vengeance. Haley is conservative, and I would argue wrong-headed, but she's not insane.
Jazzhead is right about one thing, at least. Preferring Trump as the Republican nominee is deliberately gambling that Trump will not win election. If he's not the nominee, that risk is gone - and no other likely Republican candidate (possibly outside DeSantis, who shares a few too many of Trump's proclivities) presents the same kind of threat - at least in my opinion.
