I appreciate the sincerity of those convinced that this election is good vs. evil, with Trump as the devil incarnate. But I gotta say that it's becoming clearer and clearer to me each day that the Democrats have enabled if not created this monster.
Recent polls have shown in many places that Trump's support is greater than that of GOP down ballot candidates. That's evidence that his supporters - and sympathizers, an entirely different breed of potential voter - are being galvanized. And I think that's the result of Dems foolishly conflating Trump with those who might vote for him. Hillary's jab at deplorables may have been the start, but it's still the habit of Dem pols, like Gov. Horchel the other day, to call 10,000 rallying in the Bronx as a bunch of "clowns".
And then there was Biden's taunt to African American voters that if you vote for Trump "you ain't black".
People aren't stupid. You may think of this election as an existential battle over the future of American democracy, but most folks view things, as they always do, as a referendum on the incumbent. What's unique about this election (among, of course, other things) is that voters directly get to choose between the last four years and how they thought they were doing during the four years before that.
Folks are upset by the price of groceries, and the seemingly uncontrolled invasion of migrants who are fueling an underground economy that in some places is displacing the opportunities of voters. Voters the Dems label "deplorable" view themselves as folks who followed the rules and are being leapfrogged by folks who haven't. You may deplore those sentiments but as a political matter the Dems really should shut up about it.
Considering the quite normal human inclination to react poorly to attempts at public shaming, it makes sense why the Dems' resort to lawfare is driving Trump's support up. The Dems' position, it's plain to see, is not that you must not vote for Trump. It is that you must not be able to vote for Trump. It may be hyperbolic to call that an "an attack on democracy", but it sure as hell is a poor comment on one's faith in it!
