I can't imagine that Bohm suddenly lost the talent that made him a high draft pick, this isn't Moniak growing into a totally different body and having to adjust his approach, Bohm was a top college player.

And Dom Brown looked like a future MVP. And Kingery an All-Star. And they manipulated Maikel Franco's service time so they wouldn't have to lose (or pay) him this season (when he was expected to be at 1B, deja vu).

But Bohm hasn't even had enough ABs to call it a sophomore slump so giving up on him would not be wise. I'm sure the trade rumors are more fishing expeditions, but they are also real (dating back to the team's interest in Chapman). Packing him off and just assuming Didi can play and Stott won't struggle, especially when Camargo hasn't been good in the big leagues for a long time either) seems risky.

Maybe Tampa would want Didi to play 3B. His salary and Kiermeier's are actually pretty close.

Clearing SS for Stott would really solve some roster issues.

I see a lot of fans are interested in Kiermaier for CF. He's good defensively, but a defense-first CF who is an offensive liability isn't that much help toward winning baseball games. He was absolutely terrible at the plate in '18 and '19; low average, no power, no walks. If he plays like that, we'd be just as well served putting Johan Rojas or Muzziotti out there and suffering while they figures things out at the plate. There have to be better options if we are trading for a CF. I'll live with Herrera/Moniak/Vierling rather than make that trade.

I would push back at that notion, especially since it's not at all certain that either of the Phillies' LHB CF options will be better offensive players. Kiermaier was a 3.4 WAR player with a 104+ OPS in just 348 ABs. Herrera was 1.8 WAR and 95 OPS+ in 450 ABs. Moniak, who knows.That's a significant upgrade, especially if you also trust Vierling to be an impact bat from the short side. And as bad as Kiermaier was at the plate in those other years he was still putting up more than 2.0 WAR (and 1.8 in 2020, which would have been second on the Phillies after Harper - and ahead of JT, Segura, Didi and Hoskins. So I would say an offense-first player who's a defensive liability is no better).

I don't think anyone truly wants the guy anymore though. The combination of his revised AAV and a potentially advanced timeline for Rojas has put an end to that. To some extent so did the Castellanos signing (where they might have otherwise traded for a CF and signed a cheaper bench bat).

Bohm was drafted by the previous regime. DD may not have the same evaluation on Bohm.

I do feel like the Phillies are telegraphic the same things about Bohm that they telegraphed with Spencer Howard, namely that they don't think he's very good anymore.

Someone bringing up Dom Brown was interesting. He hit the cover off the ball until he got called up in August of 2010 when, in hindsight, it looks like his deepest, darkest flaw was discovered. He was never really the same after that (aside from a great month of June in 2013).

It is funny to me that a year ago at this time the consensus was that we had 2 positions of strength for the next decade, RF and 3B. Now, after really just 2-3 bad months Bohm is considered a failure. I think that there really has to be a little more patience, he was at least hitting much better once he got going last year until he got hurt.

I can't think of any reason why he shouldn't be penciled in as our starting 3B either next week or by the end of April. We need to see what he can do, trading him for virtually nothing is a terrible idea.

I think your other middle infielders are old enough that you can get enough ABs for Bohm and Stott by resting Didi and Segura a couple of days each week. Camargo is going to struggle to see time if they keep both of them, though.

Bohm never should have been demoted last year. It didn't make the team better. It didn't make Bohm better.

He also didn't get hurt last year - it was the COVID IL that took him out for two weeks right when he was showing signs of life. A month later he was in AAA.

Of course it's also possible refusing to get vaccinated soured the Phillies on him. They might accept that from a veteran (and would also have no choice) but his season was interrupted due to a choice he made, and that does not scream out "I will do anything to help the team."

In theory there should indeed be 3-4 starts a week for Bohm if you sit Didi and Segura twice a week (with Stott filling in for them). But they won't sit more than once a week, if that. And DH spots aren't really there for any of them.

Occurs to me that most of the Phillies who had Covid really had a rough season last year. In some cases it is a lot more debilitating than we realized. I’m not sure who really had Covid and who was just restricted because of exposure and non-vaccination.

It's not just the Phillies, Scott Laughton the Flyers lost 10 lbs and struggled most of the season.
And we don't know who had "long haulers," but you'd expect a couple percent would.

Bohm actually did have COVID. The others were just close contacts (from that particular time). But of course it didn't have to happen. Breakthrough cases before Delta, and even with Delta, were much more rare than with Omicron, and not as debilitating in any case.

Kingery seems like a guy who had long COVID.

COVID itself was debilitating to some (Scott Kingery and Bailey Falter immediately come to mind). But losing weeks of game action and even just practice is a huge hindrance even if there are no symptoms.

If memory serves Falter's COVID was the reason Suarez went to the rotation, which also led to them needing Kennedy (not that more arms weren't going to be needed regardless).

Bohm had a decent OPS in June and a really good one in July (even with the absence). Then cratered again.
