Phillies Trade OF Adam Haseley to Chicago White Sox

It's just crazy how long ago that was already. And of course that 2017 lost to Houston in the ALCS (under debatable circumstances) and finally got their manager fired.

Beware of trading for NYY prospects should be every GM's mantra.

Are you saying NY doesn't draft well or that they evaluate mistakes well? (Given our scouting director came from there.)

Sorry, not clear. NYY prospects are almost always over-hyped because of the NY media and the perception that they are all good but 'blocked'. The Yanks evaluate their own players pretty well, so the ones they are willing to trade are often flawed.

Not last spring. His numbers weren't that good. High water mark on Haseley was winter after 2019, after a plus season with .405 OPS at Reading. He still didn't look like a future above average defensive CF, but looked like a #1/2 in a lineup. He also would have fetched a greater return after the 2019 season. He really always was a tweener.

Sad end to a 1st round pick who looked like he might excel at one point. Last years option-temper tantrum-go home probably was really the end for Haseley, hope he does better in the next organization.

It's really unfair to judge his actions as childish. We have no idea why he left the team. Suppose he had a family member in deep crisis and he decided to put his baseball career at risk because he felt it was more important to try to save someone he loved. That would be gracious and giving, IMO.

Like you, I hope he does better in the next organization. He showed some talent and maybe he can maximize it with the ChiSox.

Could be DBull, but it would be amazing timing to have happened just as he was being demoted. You are right, maybe it was wrong of me to assume a temper tantrum, but it really wasnt the important part of my post.

You are not remembering it correctly. Haseley played in both games of a Phillies doubleheader on April 13, including a start in Game 2. He requested his leave of absence the next day. Never lost his job, never got demoted. Was playing poorly, and we'll never know if that was for baseball reasons or for whatever led to the absence.

And then on top of that I'm pretty sure he got COVID upon returning - or at the very least was one of the dozens of players in Clearwater unable to practice and play due to outbreaks.

What's also amazing is that the Phillies still gave Moniak an almost two-week tryout last year once Haseley took his leave in mid-April. Only then did they finally add Herrera to the 40. A month later, Quinn was done and Jankowski came up.

Maybe it's just me (probably just me), but I always believed in Haseley. Certainly more than Moniak. His swing is so very natural and smooth. And he can move around the outfield. Wish him well as I believe he is very talented

Moniak does offer more upside than Haseley with maybe 20-25 HR power potential. As for defense, they are probably pretty similar. This does not diminish Moniak's lack of control of the strike zone of course, which makes his downside and failure possibility also greater than Haseley's.

Unfortunately this is the equivalent of the Luke Williams deal. We got a better player back because Haseley has more value than Williams, but we essentially gave him up for very little. I hope the change of scenery will help him improve. It is just really hard to see a consistent average starting role for Haseley now in the next couple of years. I wish he were better than Herrera, but Herrera's signing and this trade show the Phillies believe he is not better than Herrera.

I never expected Haseley and Moniak to both be on the 40 by Opening Day, I just expected someone better than Herrera to displace one of them (though of course they also added two LFs instead of one). Unfortunately their trade value can't really be rebuilt without either playing time or AAA.

Got more for Haseley than they did for Nick Williams or Aaron Altherr or Roman Quinn.

But they were not top 10 number one draft picks either. Why should the Phillies tank if they suck at it?

It was a truly epic fail at this point, 2015-2017, particularly with Kingery in there as well.

Ironic that the 14th pick - which really should have been better had that 2018 team not been in a playoff race - might be better than all of the Top 10s since Nola.

Bad draft years in ‘16 and ‘17. Neither first round had an abundance of talent in it. Maybe Moniak can turn around the ‘16 one.

It's one thing to say the drafts were thinner at the top, and I'm not saying the Phillies should have drafted Bo Bichette or Bryan Reynolds or whoever when nobody was taking those players that high. But to have essentially missed on Rounds 1-3 two years in a row (barring Moniak turning into more than 4th OF himself) while also picking higher than any other year (and on purpose!) is pretty hard to do.

At least they got something for Howard, and have Suarez to compensate for giving up on Irvin.

Funny thing, Nick Nelson, Scott Moss, Braeden Ogle and JoJo Romero were all taken in the 4th round in 2016. But so was Corbin Burnes and Shane Bieber. Irvin was the 5th-round pick.

Not sure what happened to Haesley last year when he stepped away from the game, I am not sure it even factored into their decision but... he was definitely behind the other outfielders in camp so this is not a surprise. The surprise was the deal for the reliever yesterday. I figured they opened up a 40 man spot for Stott. Still think they have a few more trades in them. Maybe even one of the larger variety. Have a sneaky feeling Bohm could be on his way out.

Or they could just send Bohm to AAA, work on his swing and his fielding, and get him ready to start in 2023 when Didi and Segura are gone.

I can't imagine that Bohm suddenly lost the talent that made him a high draft pick, this isn't Moniak growing into a totally different body and having to adjust his approach, Bohm was a top college player.

Kinda feels that way, but Kiermaier isn't likely to outhit Vierling, and if Vierling's not a negative in centerfield defensively, then hopefully recognize that too- not to mention in that kind of deal I'd want the Rays to eat all of his salary.

Kiermaier is a LH bat with standard platoon splits, so he might not affect Vierling too much. More replacing Herrera.

I don't think the Phillies want to use up their still-valuable CBT room on Kiermaier given the way his AAV gets calculated. He's almost untradeable now given the Rays would also most decidedly not pick up his salary (at least not for Bohm). At the deadline they could pay his remaining 2022 salary and maybe throw in a little bit for next year.

It does still feel like something could happen but maybe you just trade Bohm for prospects (which would also be future trade capital).

They are sure putting a lot on a 71 AB sample from Vierling though. Gotta trust the eye test and the analytics I guess but last year on July 1 Luke Williams looked like a keeper, if not quite as impressive as Vierling wound up being.
