Agree. We don't know enough about his recovery to have any certainty, so ranking him based on his progress this season with an asterisk seems appropriate.

Then I would have probably had him in the 15-20 range. He really profiles pretty close to Maton. Just has not done it in the majors yet. Middle infielder better at 2B than SS but decent defense overall. Good batting average. Medium power. Hope he makes a full recovery (for his health first, baseball second).

Matt Winkelman throws us an interim list to keep us arguing:

Griff McGarry up to 8 (with the necessary caveats) is probably the most interesting thing here. Hopefully this is the sleeper top prospect from a lower pick that this organization desperately needs. I like seeing O'Hoppe up at 6. To me he is basically around the same level as Rojas and Garcia these days. Major league starter potentially and doing well at an upper level at a young age. Good organizations are good up the middle. These 3 guys plus Stott make me feel better about our up the middle prospects in a long time.

I'd like to think that the silver lining to Curtis Meade getting promoted to AAA during his ridiculous season is that it will help me get over the Moniak draft by giving me something to lament more, but I still haven't gotten over JD Drew, so who am I kidding.

The kid went from a rookie ball nobody for the Phillies to AAA in a year with the Rays- why does the game have to be so cruel to Phillies fans??

Lets trade to get him back and figure out what it is they do that must be so much different than the way the Phillies do it.

Doesn't mean he won't be in AA next year, but no point in sending him there for only a week (whereas in AAA you get three). Of course the Rays are better than us at everything, including, I'm sure, how they worked with their prospects in 2020 when they couldn't even play.

I am assuming late AAA assignments this year will be much about the extended season. I am actually a little surprised the Phillies did not send Stott there last week when Reading lost a full week of games. I know guys like Maton need to play (and Chatham has played well too), but it is not like they could not have worked Stott into the playing rotation because prospects should have priority. I'd even think about promoting O'Hoppe even through he would likely be back at Reading next year given his age.

Not just Rojas (21), Muzziotti (22) since he finally came over, Garcia (20) and Torres (21) are all playing well in Jersey, while Stewart (22) is holding his own.
All except Stewart are LA players who needed a couple years to fill out, maybe if we're lucky a couple will break out next season and make a rapid climb to the majors.

Hard to make anything from what Muzziotti has done so far since he would have started at Reading (and might have had a shot at Philly) if he had been healthy. It is nice he is playing well though at levels he has already mastered.

Garcia has recovered most of his prospect luster. He is not a top 100 prospect, but there is enough defense there along with mid-level power to put him somewhat close to Stott as a prospect, though with much more risk. Torres is nice progression, but is really just a B level prospect at this point that probably does not make our top 20. Stewart is also older. Nice progression from his previous season, but way too much swing and miss at his age to think he is more than a Darick Hall level prospect.

Rojas is the real thing though. Still has plenty of time to lessen the swing and miss and let his skills catch up to his tools.

Think Torres may be underrated, $575K bonus said they saw something there, but he was woefully undersized when he was signed - we're seeing this pattern with a number of LA signings (Marchan, Brito, now Garcia and Torres) - they need 3-4 years to fill out and be able to hit - but betting on good athletes filling out seems to be working better than betting on finished products (physically, Ortiz, Encarcion) at 16 when you can't see if they have the eye and bat speed to hit ML pitching, especially breaking balls). This of course is the strategy they followed with LA pitchers for the most part.

Torres has little power and only average speed though. His strike zone judgement has clearly improved and that is good, but it still looks like a utility ceiling at the moment. A Nick Maton with less power. He also does not play much SS any more, so the offense needed at 2B is greater.

There is nothing special about Latin American signings needing a few years. Just like HS signings. Lots of players need to get to age 21 or age 22 before we know about their power and speed and defense. Torres has improved his hit tool. It is just the other tools that are average or below.

I often think that Ortiz and Garcia should have bought homes in Lakewood when they were originally assigned there a couple of years ago. They would have gotten to live in them for a couple of years and now be flipping them for a nice profit!

I am wondering a bit if they have changed the park there because it sure looks like more home runs are being hit at Jersey Shore. Anybody have access to the midseason park factors that BA ran? Just curious. If it still grades as an extreme pitcher's park it will make things that Ortiz and Stott and now Rojas did look better.

But they skipped the whole league, so seeing the park's relative place in the league will mean something. It is a smaller set of opponents this year, but relative stats are meaningful.

Fascinating they they named a DSL player who is not really considered a top prospect the player of the year. I think this is the first time they have ever done it. It does speak to the lack of successful seasons among the better pitching prospects in the organization. Cristian Hernandez might have had the best year of anyone stateside and he only threw 71.2 IP (though Cabrera threw even less with 46 so far). Look at the other contenders: Morales was terrible. Abel had a really short season. Victor Vargas plateaued after his promotion. Crouse did not play much here. Adam Leverett is not really considered a great prospect. Cristopher Sanchez had an uneven year. Maybe the competition for the reward is guys like Josh Hendrickson and Ethan Lindow.

Might as well give it to the DSL guy they like they had a nice season and has decent stuff.
