Man, looking down that list of what could have been for the phillies. Gore. Liberatore, Adell. nah, let's go with Cornelious Randolph. no wonder their so far behind the braves.

In its own way, this was almost as disastrous a first round pick as LGJ. Have the Phillies replaced scouting side personnel as a result? As with LGJ, you start with a prospect who is defensively challenged, so the bar that the bat must clear is very high. Randolph is repeating AA at a reasonable age 22 and he has increased his OPS over last year, but only to .690, not nearly high enough for a poor defensive LF, who isn't a burner on the basepaths. He seems to have grown into some of his in-game HR power, compared to 2018, but his SLG was higher at CLW in 2017. Compared to last year, his walks are down a bit and his strikeouts are up a bit. A terrible pick by the scouting staff.

For whatever it's worth, Gore was not available to the Phils. Liberatore and Adell picks would have come at the expense of Bohm and Haseley (but yes, I'd rather have Adell than Haseley).

I was serious about the question above, and wonder if anyone knows the answer. LGJ and Randolph both slow, not great shape, defensively limited H.S. corner OF/1B from Georgia. Were they pushed by the same scout and regional cross checker? Are those guys still with the organization. The two worst first rounders in recent years just have so much in common.

I think it's safe to say Wolever was the biggest scalp re: Randolph, though they took Kingery too. Given how much turnover there has been since it seems more likely than not some of those involved were gone. LGJ too (though he was not a true first round pick).

Wolevers last draft was 2014 (Nola/Hoskins) where Amaro instructed him to take all college players). Almaraz was hired in October 2014. The entirety of the 2015 draft (Randolph/Kingery) was Johnny Almaraz and his team.

oh, my bad. But still Amaro (or Gillick?) I remember they made a big deal about Randolph's hit tool though, wasn't LGJ the opposite?

Okay, I did my own research. The area scout for both the LGJ signing and the Cornelius Randolph signing was Aaron Jersild. I think that Gene Schall was the regional supervisor above Jersild for both signings. Jersild was still the Phillies area scout for Georgia in the 2018 draft, when he recommended Logan Simmons, who was our 6th round pick.

In the 2015 draft thread (archived on this board!), I just looked and found where I quoted Jim Callis as saying the Phillies took "the best player on the board" in none other than Cornelius Randolph.

That he accurately reported what the Phillies draft board looked like. It just wasn't an accurate draft board. No question the Phillies wanted Randolph; this wasn't a save money on the first round bonus plan.

Not for nothing but Vlad Guerrero Jr.'s performance last night is at least causing discussions outside of this board of our scouting and development. I'm not taking a position other than pointing it out that for the first time outside of message boards people are at least starting to critically evaluate the Phillies other than just at the major league level.

Year 1 of trying to win and the system is trending down already. The improvements to the infrastructure in the organization seems great- but player decisions seem like an endless string of perceived "bad luck".

Jay Bruce is the first reclamation that worked for them- it's the ability to identify and develop those kind of projects (especially in the bullpen and rotation) that give winners depth. Klentak can't survive the winter with his job. Just can't or this organization will be a (bigger) mess in 2 years.

We're at that stage where we play the "lets find every player who is good that the phillies didn't draft and ask why they didn't know he was good even though every other team didn't know it either"

I guess we needed to move on from the 4 first rounders in a row suck line of thinking....

Not sure I agree the organization is trending down any more (pending prospect trades of course). Once we dealt Sanchez and Crawford and had other promotions we were trending down cumulatively the last few years.

This year was more about leveling off and we have had some decent minor league performances of prospects a bit beyond the top 100. Muzziotti, Damon Jones, Bohm of course. Francisco Morales. Kyle Glogoski. This has not been an awful year for prospect performance and the GCL and DSL teams look above average. I am also positive on this draft even though we know nothing about the number 1 which is of course half the draft.

We were already around 20th in the league in talent before the season. I don't think that standing has dropped really during the season. Of course losing draft picks and international allocations will not make it easy to improve, but we did at least trade for additional international slots last year. Cautiously optimistic that the system is trending a bit up now.
