I still think the Braves are the team I least want to see. Though I also might prefer to see them in the NLDS than the NLCS.

But we can still eke out the AL teams.

This also means the Brewers are our chalk NLDS opponent. I think I'd still rather see the Mets or even DBacks as the #6 over the Braves, but don't mind dodging the Padres (or the West Coast in general if it's not Arizona).

Mets have now lost three straight. Dbacks have lost 4 of 5 before tonight. Braves have won five straight.

The Mets or Braves have to lose out and the Dbacks have to win their last for the Dbacks to make the playoffs. They lose the tiebreaker to both the Braves and Mets.

It seems to me that if the Diamondbacks win OR the Mets lose on Sunday, the Mets and Braves need to play at least one game on Monday. If Arizona wins AND the Mets lose, they need to play the first game on Monday, and then the second if the Mets win game 1. This would happen even if the Braves win on Sunday and clinch the five seed. The Braves might have to play two games that are meaningless for them, when it would be in their best interest to rest everyone and use pitchers that won’t be used early in their first playoff series. In other words, the Diamondbacks would need the Braves to play against their best interests. What a mess.

Now the Diamondbacks postseason hopes rest on a team (the winner of game 1 of the doubleheader) winning a game which is meaningless to them and where they have every incentive to hold back their best players.

I was giving my friend who is an Arizona fan a bit of a hard time for worrying that his team was going to blow it, and then they went 1-4 before today. But then, so did the Phillies. So while part of me thinks the league should make sure the second game is competitive, another part of me thinks it was decided long ago. Heck, if the Phillies had a better 5th starter all of these teams might have different records right now too.

So for all intents and purposes if we assume the winner of Game 1 wouldn't try to win Game 2, the field and the seeds are locked - Braves #5 Mets #6, which also puts the Mets in our bracket. The only way the Mets can be #5 is if they sweep and knock the Braves out, which would put Arizona in our bracket. Ditto if the Braves sweep (they're still 5, AZ 6).

If the Mets win Game 1 really no motivation to try and get to that 5th seed which would only buy them two potential West Coast road trips. If the Braves win Game 1 all the more reason to rest knowing they are about to fly to San Diego no matter what.

I'm "rooting" for the Mets (who are winning again) tbh, I will take my chances with them or the Brewers. Dislike the Braves enough that it amuses me to think they will have to try and win the next game and then go to San Diego ... or be out entirely.

Of course now that I said that out loud...
