I'd like to see some creativity deal making for a closer without going so far as to crapshoot. I like Kimbrel better than Iglesias, but both feel like they have the potential to bust (though every closer does) with a high price tag. Kimbrel falls into inexplicable seasonal slumps between seasons where he's untouchable, and Iglesias lets nearly one out of every 5 flyballs leave the ballpark. That sounds like exactly the kind of guy I don't want to see, or give up a draft pick for.

Kendal Graveman is an interesting option. Stuff-wise he's kind of like Ian Kennedy- throws hard without a lot of k's, but instead of living up in the zone and being homer-prone, his 2-seamer is pretty wicked. His stuff also seems to be evolving and getting better. Pair him with an acquisition of another late inning reliever that can strike people out and I'd be happy.

I'd love if the Phils could put together a trade with the A's for Chapman, he's solve the 3B problem and would probably see a power uptick playing at CBP rather than that "stadium" in Oakland. You'd probably have to trade Stott and one of the pitching prospects to get him, but I'd consider that.

From what I have read about him, Beane trades for prospects that are close to major league ready so as to Maximize the likelihood of success. Beane does not go for “A ball” types. He wants close to sure things. He would definitely want Stott and he might demand Suarez too just to get things started. I really doubt we have enough “almost MLB ready” prospects to win the bidding for any of the A’s big names.

I'm not too enamored with Chapman. His glove is Arenado level, but his bat is pretty meh and he'd take a haul to get.

Every time I read about the closer market I hate all of them, and actually better appreciate the Phillies' bullpen approach over the last few years even though it didn't really work. The sure thing is rare, and paying for the sure thing only seems to increase the risk. I bet we save $ there and end up with Melancon or Jansen. I was ready to write Melancon off two teams ago (when we failed to acquire him in 2019) so maybe his drop-off is still coming, maybe it isn't. Jansen's had his moments in both directions.

The Phillies have selected the contracts of INF Luis García, RHP James McArthur and OF Jhailyn Ortiz to the 40-man roster, and have claimed LHP Kent Emanuel off waivers from HOU. PHI is at 36 players on the 40-man roster.

Emanuel is 29yo. Was suspended a couple years ago for PEDs. his season ended early in 2021 due to elbow surgery to "repair" his UCL (so not TJ surgery)

Kent Emanuel is an interesting pickup.

He's another lefty with two Minor League options. Heavy sinker baller. Pitched 17.2 innings of 2.55 ERA ball for the Astros this year.

Again, feels like another depth-assurance move for a LHP-lacking bullpen. Fine by me.

It does seem that the PED suspension was not deserved. Nice waiver claim on a major league LHP with options. Roster still at 36 so they have room to maneuver the next few weeks.

Phillies took advantage of Yankees 40 man crunch and made a trade

Phillies Get
RHP Nick Nelson
C Donny Sands

Yankees Get
LHP Joel Valdez
1B TJ Rumfield

Seems like a great deal for the Phillies. Sands probably is a major league ready back-up and was the Yankees 28th ranked prospect. Nelson is a live arm 26 year old with bad major league numbers.

Nelson is more of a 4-pitch starter with average stuff from what I read. Was in their top 20 in 2020 before he lost his prospect status. Nice depth. Does not seem like we gave up much. 21-year-old DSL arm and our 12th round pick from last year (not an overslot guy - $125K) who seems to be your typical college corner backup without enough offense to be a decent prospect.

I figured there were some moves to be made with the roster at 36. And we still have some players we could try to slip through if we have too. Sands is probably a nice extra catcher to have at AAA and is probably more ready than Marchan offensively. Whether he is good enough to be the backup next year is an open question. Maybe they bring Knapp back on a minor league deal (or another similar veteran) and let the two compete.

Your take on Nelson is better than mine. But he had good minor league numbers in 2018-2019. Andrew Knapp just put up a .429 OPS at age 29 last year in 160 Plate Appearances. I see no reason not to go with Marchan or Sands as the back-up so I am hoping Knapp is gone.

Dombrowski has already made it pretty clear Marchan is going to be in AAA, getting regular ABs. So it's more a question of Sands vs. a vet, and how much to spend on that vet. No harm in bringing Knapp to ST if he wants to be there. Also no urgency to bring him back or he'd have been tendered.

Better chance that Marchan gest at bats with another team. Just a hunch. With Ohoppe right on his heals and Sands presumably in front of him I would think they trade from an area of strength to help some other area on the team.

Like the trade overall. Nelson is probably a AAAA type starter.

Yeah, I kind of figured they'd hold Marchan until the trade deadline but you might be right. I do believe that of the three major holes (LF, CF, closer) one will likely be filled by trade.

I like Stubbs, but Cerny was a type of guy the organization really needs to keep around and start developing if they are going to fix their depth problem. Cerny is a super toolsy guy that could really come back to bite them like Meade.

All organizations have a dozen or more FCL outfielders. It is not really a numbers game. It is the Phillies trading a prospect who does not have to be on the 40-man roster who is only depth at the moment. For someone that does need to be on the 40.

I like Cerny too but am fine trading a toolsy depth guy who is a bit older. Agree with others that this does free them to trade Marchan if they want to. Either Sands or Stubbs is likely the backup catcher.

Wondering out loud with the compression of the lower minors last season, having less teams if the trades of these lower level guys are simply because there is a roster crunch there. Just thinking out loud there. With Cerny he had good college numbers but wondering if his transition to the wood bat was an issue. Not sure as I didn't see him play but seems odd you would give up on a bat like that unless they simply think he will never hit with a wood bat. I know I am grasping at straws but could be an explanation.
