Howard is our best pitching prospect but something's been going awry with him and the Phillies don't quite know how to figure out what it is. Gowdy is a reclamation project at this point. Is he rule 5 eligible this winter? Gessner, the Aussie, is probably a lotter ticket.

Howard is NOT the Phils best pitching prospect, Howard was the teams best pitching prospect, Abel and Pointer have zoomed past him. DD did a masterful job of upgrading the roster in my mind, the clubhouse is going to be happy. Gibson slots in as the 4th starter and is a dependable 6 inning guy, Kennedy becomes the closer, Crouse becomes likely the 3rd best pitching prospect in the organization, Galvis provides solid infield defensive depth and Phils can now think about moving either Falter or Suarez to the rotation.

Oh, and now sign Hamels for the September stretch run...

The Hamels scenario would still be interesting now! I don't think they will move Suarez this year. Next year maybe. And Falter may be a month away from being able to start (two weeks just to come back from this IL stint, two to ramp up from relief).

My guess is we still finish 1-2 games out, and there will be some Kennedy blown saves along the way. "Do something but not too much" was probably the right move in the end, and they did do something for 2022 (but not without losing someone who should have been part of 2022 as well) but it seems to be me the aversion to the CBT is what drove their decisions, more than the quality of the team or the need to hold onto prospects.

I wonder if they would have done the Gibson deal had the Anderson deal happened.

zambonir...many seem to be lamenting the fact that the Phils didn't want to go over the luxury tax but the fact is that we still don't know that and won't till Hamels signs. Remember, when DD was asked about Hamels he said A] he looked very good, surprisingly good and B] he might do something with Hamels depending on how the trade deadline went. I took this to mean..."if we get a southpaw or not." Well, Anderson didn't come and Gibson is still right handed so....connect the dots!

Doesn't mean they will get him but Hamels sure does slot into a comfortable 5th starter, southpaw role, doesn't he? And he hasn't signed with anyone yet so let's see what happens

The Texas deal was cash neutral on the luxury tax and Galvis will barely count for more than $500K. We still have $3-$4 million of room under the threshold and if Hamels does not sign for a week or two it is hard to see his pro-rated salary being more than $3 million (i.e. $12 million plus for a season).

Pretty sure we can do Hamels if we want to. Another bad start from Moore and Velasquez and we might want to.

Solid move, didn't give up too much of the future.
Crouse is similar to Howard, both 2nd rd pick b/c of questions, both had 1st rd stuff.
Gowdy is a nice comeback story, but not a huge price to pay for a stretch run addition, and Gessner is behind a couple dozen other pitchers.
Ogle then adds back a lefty, while I think they moved Gutierrez b/c they have a lot of catchers behind him who are younger such as Edwards (21), Perez (17) and Nava (19).
Burch? Cheap price for Galvis.

Austin I think you are right. Todays moves were all solid. Moves for both this year but also beyond as they have the rights to Gibson next year at a reasonable cost I may add, plus you have Crouse and Ogle who both should be contributing at the MLB level by mid year next year. That is not to say that they added for this year to with Kennedy and Galvis. At what cost? A former top prospect in Howard who has bounced back en forth the past two years between AAA and AA. He is 25 already and like I said before I am not so sure I would have balked at Howard for Crouse straight up. Crouse is only 22. Ogle is a middle reliever type but one we have control of for the next six years. I have no doubt he is protected from the rule 5. You build bullpens with guys like Ogle. I think he was a very smart addition by DD. Would I have liked to have gotten a centerfielder sure, another starter sure. But its really hard to add two starters, two relievers, a centerfielder etc. all in one day with limited resources.
One other thing. I know the folks in Reading have to be thrilled with this deal. To get Crouse to come in and give their attendance a shot in the arm. They basically have Stott and a middling Morales right now in AA and thats it. At least when Crouse pitches they may draw some more fans to the park. I know the Phillies didn't have any of that in mind when they did this, it was simply a by product but a good by product.

Clearly Dombrowski is thinking about the next three years, not just 2021. I believe this is what most of us hoped he was thinking. I really like Hans part of this deal, and if the Phillies find themselves as sellers in 2022, Gibson can be flipped again.

Not to poor mouth Howard but he’s had a couple of shots to snatch a starters’ role with the club and failed. Time to move on. The Phillies have been too generous keeping around pitchers who fail such as Pivetta and VV. There comes a time when you just need to try someone else even if it means that the ditched player makes it somewhere else.
