It's just a little longer than I might have thought, but that doesn't really matter. He could still get canned or leave for an expansion team should that opportunity re-present itself. And if all goes well, he'll stick around, or they'll add "vice president" to Fuld's title (if he doesn't leave first).
This being the Phillies of course it is also just as likely that, win lose or tread water, DD will finish his career here, perhaps even with that little slice of ownership that Monty and Gillick each got, and then as an advisor long after we wish he was gone.
More importantly than the World Series I think he's made good hires and hasn't/won't mortgage the future too badly. But the job's still not easy. I think this year was neither '93 nor 2007 but MLB has changed a lot since both of those years. Exactly what we saw - a wild card that got lucky/hot - is what we can expect, more than a 100-105 win team, more years than not. 1 or two non-playoff years over the next five also likely, unless they perfectly nail the transition from this core to a new one (but there's still not enough of a new one showing itself).
