Phillies All Stars

This is an odd season, we are in 1st place and were recently as good as the 4th best team in baseball, but really are there any players playing at an All-Star level? Some might make it on reputation rather than performance (Harper, Nola) but I can really only think of 1 guy that actually deserves it (Neris) and he is at a tough position to land a All-Star nod. Segura, maybe, but he missed time.

Maybe they throw us a bone and add Kapler as a coach, but I am not really sure I think he deserves it either.

Yes, like last year, this does seem to be a whole is greater than the sum of its parts team. Segura and Realmuto probably have the best shot. Neris and Efflin deserve considration but too many other starters and relievers are just having considerably better seasons than them and each of them falls short in terms of critical "counting" stats (saves for Neris, wins and strikeouts for Efflin). Something tells me that this is going to be the sixth straight year in which the Phillies have a lone all-star.

I was expecting Harper to get enough fan votes but he's currently 10th, and Bellinger and Yelich are already locks.

Realmuto is third.

Hoskins should be a legit contender, but tough position. He's 7th.

My guess is even with the improved team and attendance the Phillies don't yet have an excited enough fan base or the brand-name players to do well in online voting. The Cubs lead in 7 categories and the Dodgers are high in most (deservedly of course).

You never know with pitchers, as far as the selection process, but this isn't Nola's year and they take so few relievers.

I put Realmuto and Neris down, though the path for each is crowded. Interestingly Alfaro might get in as a catcher because if you look at the Marlins roster, who else deserves it more?

Yea, I added him to the poll because I think that is a possibility. He has certainly hit well enough but lacks the PAs that would normally be associated with the honor. Remember when we were about 10 days into the season and he hadnt started yet? Strange year.

So it comes down to the player ballots or the league choices. Only advantage is there is one fewer fan-selected starter in the NL.

If things hold, the Phillies certainly will be relying on that. Even if Harper gets into the Top 9 he probably won't win; ditto Realmuto. Hernandez never had a chance but for the second straight year he's fallen off some right in the middle of voting. 1B is crowded but I could still see MLB putting Hoskins in there. I guess we're not likely to see a HR Derby re-match between the two now-teammates.

Cutch was probably our most deserving guy.

Pablo Lopez? Caleb Smith if he gets healthy again?

They really don't have loud stats or analytical WAR stats either. Brian Anderson and Miguel Rojas have the highest WAR on the team built largely from defensive stats (small sample of course) and they don't look like All Stars either.

There are really no good candidates and Alfaro might have as good a case as anyone and somebody has got to go.
