That's a fair assessment of Waguespack. Probably MLB role #5 starter or low leverage reliever who pitches multiple innings. We have an excess of those. I was hoping for a little better LOOGY, but Loup is OK in that role. Two B-ish trades for Klentak.

All the Fullerton guys (Eshelman, Seabold, etc.) are better versions of him IMO. This is why teams accumulate depth. They need to make deals like this while protecting their better prospects.

Aaron Loup

Waguespack was a pickup off the street, big boy who they fix his mechanics, got him to use his legs and added 2-3 MPH to his FB. Fast riser last year, actually pitched better as a starter, but struggled when he got pushed to Lehigh, 24 years old so he's pretty much a finished product physically, has an outside shot at a 5th starter but probably his upside is long relief. Since we have Thompson, Leiter, Anderson ahead of him, and Leftwich right behind him, he didn't have much future in the role of RP/swing starter.

We got Curtis for nothing, hence he's nothing. He lost his job to Milner, he lost his job to Davis and now he's lost his job to Loup. His WHIP when he did pitch this year was brutal, which is presumably why they never brought him up again, even with Morgan on paternity leave.

Loup is a small improvement for little cost. I have no problem with the deal and assume that every Spring we will bring 3 Curtis equivalents in off the street anyway because there are lots of inconsistent LOOGY's out there.

Small price for some piece of mind here. That makes it a decent deal.

With the usual reliever/SSS caveats, Davis has not been as good as we think he is, he's actually getting more righties out. .

Their four best options this season by OPS allowed to lefties are all right-handed pitchers: Seranthony Domínguez, Luis García, Edubray Ramos and Mark Leiter Jr. Adam Morgan slots in fifth, and then you have to go four more spots before finding the only other lefty in the ‘pen, Austin Davis, who has more than held his own overall despite not pitching well against left-handed hitters. That’s not an ideal bullpen makeup for an NL team in the Phillies’ position.

Given the value of the player they gave up is almost zero to the Phillies (I think Wags has a shot at pitching in the majors, but not with the Phillies, who were unlikely to protect him on the 40), gambling on Loup is a no cost lottery ticket.
