There is absolutely no reason that Hernandez should be limited to second base. He has enough arm to fill in at SS, and anyone who can even passably play SS can play 3B with practice. He may have to play more shallow than some 3B with stronger arms, but 3B can play shallow effectively.

I would certainly have him taking 3B ground balls in the spring.

I disagree with your thinking here. I think that Franco knows with all the talk about Machado that this is his put up or shut up year. Either he plays to his talent and we can spend money elsewhere next year or he doesn't and we find another solution whether it be Machado or someone else.

I bet Kingery starts three games at 3B in spring training too. Crawford as well. Honestly Hernandez might be the guy they don't touch at this point. Though if Kapler walks the walk, he'll move around the diamond too.

Don't forget, unless he has a change of heart (or is acquired by trade rather than free agency) Machado likely won't be playing 3B for the Phillies.If his dream his SS giving him that dream will be a big part of the free agent pitch.

Yes, but it's not likely there'd be a need to put Scott Kingery in LF to "get him in the lineup." This would be at the expense of another outfielder - and as of now, we have four starting outfielders, plus at least one prospect in Roman Quinn. If Kingery is good enough to displace one of these guys, he should just be starting at 2B, period.

Yeah but if they keep Cesar and Kingery's busting down the door in May either of them could turn up in the OF occasionally. Again, just based on how the Dodgers used Chris Taylor (5 positions) and Logan Forsythe (4 positions).

Precisely...especially if they deal Williams and Quinn is hurt (or ineffective)

If Kingery can play 2B, 3B and LF, and Knapp can play 1B/C, and Florimon can play 2B/SS/3B/OF and Quinn can play OF, that's a pretty versatile bench, albeit without much power.
