Jim Peyton on PhuturePhillies noted that Jose Pujols, who missed almost all of last season with an injury has signed a minor league contract for 2020. Had been a free agent. Two years ago he showed some signs of life with his bat at both Clearwater and Reading. He'd be an interesting guy to look at in the Dominican this winter if he is healthy (only had 5 PA in GCL in late August).

It's total years ("championship seasons," in MLB's jargon) performance under contract. The Uniform Players Contract (minors) binds first-time players until they've played in seven seasons. After that, if they're not on the 40-man roster in the winter, they're free agents (unless they've signed a multi-year contract - which doesn't happen much in the minors!).

Ramos signed in 2010. Gosselin actually before that - and he's been reported as having "elected" free agency, although the AAA transactions page doesn't show that. Note that this "election" is automatic; unless a player (e.g., Jose Pujols) signs a new contract, he's a free agent. No need to file any papers; no need to do anything.

There are separate cases where a player may be said to "declare" free agency - when the player has the right to opt for free agency, but when that isn't automatic. Players over a ML service time threshold who are outrighted more than one time have the option of refusing the outright and declaring free agency - in this case, they only become free agents if they assert their right; thus, "declaring" free agency. But the end-of-year, end-of-contract stuff, is automatic. MLB characterizes it as "electing" free agency, rather than just saying they "became" free agents. No idea why; some lawyer, probably.

Curious that neither the mlb.com transactions pages nor BA lists Gosselin as a mlfa, but multiple reporters tweeted (back on the 4th) that he was. I wonder if he's been re-signed? He certainly has the service time (in the minors) to qualify for free agency (nine seasons), and he's not eligible for major-league free agency.

EDIT: Did a bit more research on Gosselin. He did, in fact, reject his outright assignment - so instead of going to AAA and "electing" free agency, he refused the assignment, and "declared" free agency - which makes him, technically, a "free agent," but not a "six-year minor league free agent." Not that it matters - he's free to sign wherever he wants.

Brayan Gonzalez being the big miss there. He was from the class where we got Francisco Morales and got the larger bonus ($900K vs $720K). Had a decent year in GCL as a 17-year-old but was awful in the 2 years after that.

while on the subject of Gonzalez, there is a decent article in inquirer.com this morning. not sure if this is the correct place to post, but it is about how the phils missed on some big current Latin names and Sal is always thinking about it. sounds like he is happy about Ortiz's instructional time and mentions some other of the phils players. Miniti has some quotes too. looks like they missed the boat on Gonzalez. A crap shoot i guess.
