With the end of the World Series, the expiration date of Minor League Uniform Player Contracts is set at November 2nd. On that date - Friday - the contracts of Phils minor leaguers who have satisfied the "seven championship seasons" clause in their contracts, and who are not on the club's 40-man roster (so-called "6-year" minor league free agents), become minor-league free agents.

I find myself hoping that the Phillies are able to keep half of these guys. I suspect they won't go anywhere until after the Rule 5 draft. I don't see any of them being added to our 40-man roster.

No surprise as Joey Meneses heads to Japan. Just no way he could be offered a 40-man spot on a team with both Santana and Hoskins.

Not that I fault the Phillies in any way but it's a shame the Phillies were not able to spare Meneses a 40 man roster spot this past September.

Well, it's pretty telling that he's not expecting any of the 29 other teams to offer him a guaranteed deal either .Right-handed no-field power just isn't valued (and we already knew that from Joseph and Ruf over the last few years).

5 pm has come and gone, and the minor league free agents are now... free agents.

I hadn't looked at the list in the context of individual rosters before...but looking at the AAA roster now, literally every member of the catching corps, every infielder, and every outfielder on the AAA roster as of this morning is now a free agent.

Some of these guys may re-sign with the Phillies; some will not.

The whole list of former farmhands who are now minor league free agents is in the top post. A couple of names not formerly mentioned:
RHP Mario Sanchez, formerly at AA
C Kevin Martir, formerly at SA (Williamsport)

Interestingly, Malquin Canelo is NOT listed in the transactions. Now, this may be just a temporary oversight on the part of the web site staff... or it could be that the Phillies and Canelo have reached some kind of agreement. Time will tell.

Added a whole raft of transactions from 11/20 to the top post. These are the assignments that set the AAA winter roster, for Rule 5 purposes. These transactions have not been posted on the MiLB transactions pages, but were obtained by Jim Peyton and posted at phuturephillies.com. I've transcribed them into MiLB's standard formats.

Many of these assignments will likely be temporary - these guys were added to the AAA roster to protect them from the minor league portion of the Rule 5 draft. Many of them will wind up on other rosters in April, when the full-season minor leagues get under way.

Looking for signings of some of the minor league free agents to minor league contracts. They also usually sign some players who have some ML time to minor league contracts. Some will have out dates to become a free agent if not added to the ML roster. Others are signing to play in the high minors with a hope of a ML chance if they do well.

The reserve lists that are set for each minor league level have no bearing on the actual team assignments coming out of the spring camp. The AAA list cannot be drafted in the minor league level of the rule 5 draft, so it may contain players the Phillies don't want to lose in that phase of the draft but who are projected to play at a lower level in 2019. That is a reason that the club and MLB does not publish these reserve lists. A number of years ago I sent off a question to the Phillies as to why these lists were not on their official web site. I received a reply that said essentially that they did not want to confuse the fans since these lists will not be the rosters next season. Clearly they did not think the fans were smart enough to be able to understand this.

I would like to see each of the ML official web sites maintain a list of all players in the organization. I don't have hopes that I will ever see this.

Fans step up , step in. For Phillies fans, that means Jim Peyton at phuturephillies.com. Jim obtains transactions information, things like winter roster assignments, etc., from sources other than those published by MLB (or MiLB) on the web. Jim's in Clearwater, and visits the Phils' complex almost daily. You want lists of all players in the organization at every level - Jim maintains that. (I keep my own spreadsheets, but they're not published, and I update them...kind of sporadically these days. Jim's stuff is generally pretty current.)

Actual signings to minor league contracts - whether minor league free agents or guys with ML service time - will eventually be posted to the MLB or MiLB transactions pages. Again, with regard to signings by the Phillies, it's likely that phuturephillies will report them before they're officially posted. Currently, you can see lists of Phillies transactions both here (top post) and at phuturephillies, in the weekly Discussion threads.

I generally don't update the listings in these threads until transactions get posted to the MLB/MiLB web pages - because while Jim often gets the news sooner, some of his stuff - particularly signing dates - varies some of the time from the final, official signing information. I suspect that he's getting info from the Complex, and sometimes there are delays (likely in New York) before signings are "officially" finalized. I made an exception with regard to Jim's reporting of the winter roster assignments, because I know from experience that the MLB/MiLB web pages probably will never report those assignments.

Tom Housenick at the Morning Call reports that Matt McBride has been signed by the Phils to a minor-league contract for 2019:

Adding minor-league lifers to the AAA roster. Happens every winter - means nothing as far as the big club is concerned.

Matt Eddy, at Baseball America, reports that the Phillies signed OF Shane Robinson to a minor-league deal on December 7th (a day that will live...). Hasn't appeared on the mlb.com or milb.com transactions pages yet...but it's December, and the intern left in September, so...
