PHILLIES ACQUIRE RHP PAT NESHEK FROM ASTROS
The Phillies announced today that they have acquired right-handed pitcher Pat Neshek from the Houston Astros in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations. Additionally, Philadelphia exercised Neshek’s club option for the 2017 season.
In 2016, Neshek went 2-2 with a 3.06 ERA (16 ER, 47.0 IP), 0.94 WHIP (33 H, 11 BB) and 43 strikeouts (8.23 K/9.0) in 60 relief appearances with Houston. He held right-handed hitters to a .172 average (21-122), 12th-best among all American League relievers. According to FanGraphs’ weighted pitch types, Neshek had the eighth-most effective slider of any AL reliever this year, trailing only Dellin Betances, Ken Giles, Andrew Miller, Alex Colome, Steve Cishek, Nate Jones and Robbie Ross Jr.
Overall, Neshek has a 28-19 career record with seven saves and a 2.93 ERA in 423 games between the Minnesota Twins (2006-2008, 2010), San Diego Padres (2011), Oakland A’s (2012-13), St. Louis Cardinals (2014) and Astros (2014-15). The 10-year veteran was originally selected in the sixth round of the June 2002 draft out of Butler University.
