[size=150] PHILLIES CLAIM ACHTER, ADD THREE MORE PLAYERS TO 40-MAN ROSTER [/size]
The Phillies have claimed right-hander A.J. Achter off waivers from the Minnesota Twins, Vice President and General Manager Matt Klentak announced today. Additionally, right-handed pitchers Jimmy Cordero and Edubray Ramos and outfielder Roman Quinn had their contracts selected to the 40-man roster.
The 27-year-old Achter spent the majority of the 2015 season with triple-A Rochester, where he went 4-2 with 14 saves and a 2.63 ERA in 43 games. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound righty held opponents to a .167 average with the Red Wings, including a .147 mark versus left-handed hitters, while averaging 8.81 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (47 SO/48.0 IP). Achter also pitched in 11 games with Minnesota, going 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in 13.1 innings. Seven of his 11 appearances with the Twins were scoreless. He was originally selected by Minnesota in the 46th round of the June 2010 draft out of Michigan State University.
Acquired in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays for outfielder Ben Revere this past July, Cordero combined to post a 2.55 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 45 games (67.0 IP) this season between single-A Dunedin, double-A New Hampshire and double-A Reading. Cordero is currently pitching for Leones del Escogido in the Dominican Winter League, where he has yet to give up a run in any of his seven appearances (7.1 IP). Overall, in 93 career minor league games, he is 8-9 with a 3.58 ERA in 143.1 innings. The 24-year-old was originally signed by Toronto in 2012 as an amateur free agent out of San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.
Ramos, 22, split the 2015 season between single-A Clearwater and Reading and combined to go 4-6 with a 2.07 ERA and .196 opponents average in 47 relief appearances. From June 8-14, he was named both Florida State League Pitcher of the Week and Phillies Minor League Pitcher of the Week. Additionally, Ramos pitched for the Glendale Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League. The Caracas, Venezuela, native has a 9-10 record with a 3.12 ERA in 97 career minor league games. He was originally signed by the St. Louis Cardinals as an amateur free agent in 2010.
Selected by the Phillies in the second round of the June 2011 draft out of Port St. Joe High School in Florida, the 22-year-old Quinn batted .306 with six doubles, six triples, four home runs, 15 RBI and 44 runs in 58 games this season with Reading. He was named to the midseason Eastern League All-Star team and led all Phillies farmhands with 29 stolen bases, despite missing the final two months of the season with a torn left hip flexor. He is currently playing for Tigres del Licey in the Domincan Winter League. Earlier this month, the speedy outfielder was ranked 8th by Baseball America on the Phillies Top 10 Prospects list.
With the additions of Achter, Cordero, Ramos and Quinn, the Phillies now have 37 players on their 40-man roster.
