PHILLIES ADD THREE PLAYERS TO 40-MAN ROSTER
Left-handed pitchers Jesse Biddle and Adam Morgan and right-hander Nefi Ogando had their contracts selected to the Phillies 40-man roster, Senior Vice President and General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced today.
Originally selected by the Phillies in the 1st round (27th overall) of the June 2010 draft out of Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia, the 23-year-old Biddle went 5-10 with a 4.58 ERA in 19 starts last season between Reading (AA), Clearwater (A) and the GCL Phillies (R). He struck out 92 batters in 94.1 innings while holding opposing batters to a .234 average. The southpaw was a non-roster invitee to Phillies spring training in 2014 and currently ranks 4th among all Phillies farmhands on MLB.com’s prospect watch.
Morgan, 24, missed the entire 2014 season while recovering from shoulder surgery. He participated in the Arizona Fall League this year, appearing in six games (five starts) for the Scottsdale Scorpions. In 56 career minor league games (55 starts), Morgan has posted a 3.25 ERA in 290.2 innings. The Marietta, Ga., native was selected by Philadelphia in the 3rd round of the 2011 draft out of the University of Alabama.
Acquired in a trade with the Boston Red Sox for infielder John McDonald in 2013, Ogando spent the entire 2014 season with Reading, going 5-1 with seven saves in a team-high 48 appearances. He posted a 3.86 ERA after the All-Star break for the Fightins after beginning the year with a 7.47 ERA over his first 32 games. The 25-year-old also went 1-0 with three saves and a 3.07 ERA in 12 games for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League. Ogando was originally signed by Boston in 2010 as an amateur free agent out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
With the additions of Biddle, Morgan and Ogando, the Phillies now have 38 players on their 40-man roster.
