Mets aren't gonna walk away though. They just need some new terms/protection. Giants probably wanted that too but Boras didn't give them the chance. Personally I'd still sign him and then pack him off to surgery, even if he misses a half-season. Some players are worth that (ahem).

Braves sign recently-acquired Sean Murphy to a six year $73 million extension putting them in the luxury tax threshold. Interestingly how they've done that by extending their own guys while eschewing the deep end of the free agency pool, including let their own big ticket free agents walk. Astros seem to do the same.

Start the long term contracts earlier and there is a better chance they work out if you are sure about the players. We should have done this contract (or something similar) with JT immediately after we traded for him.

Man do I remember back in the day when Marlon Byrd looked like the next star that was going to be added to the core when he was coming through the minors- only to show up in the big leagues and look like he was only swinging with his hands. Good on him for sticking around so long and eventually putting up the numbers when he got older.

Mets dodged a bullet. This was a signing they didn't need. They already have Lindor and Escobar with Baty on the way. Cohen was just spending for the sake of spending on him, imo.

6-year deal with a higher AAV is good for both sides I think. Twins really don't have AAV concerns and the shorter deal does make more sense if his ankle plate of whatever that was wears out over time.

For Correa I guess the question is whether he can make up that extra $115 million on his next contract (unless there are opt-outs again).

Beyond that, the Twins have already seen the results of Correa physicals. They've already evaluated his ankle situation. Unless something new turns up, the physical should be more of a formality than was the case with new organizations.

Apparently though, they haven't. I mean, yeah, their training staff and doctors already have a better sense of him than anyone but his last actual physical was probably in spring training. But I'm sure the contract reflects an acceptance of any possible issues.

The funny thing is all the teams who walked away from him would have happily signed him at this price/term I'm sure. But that's not how the politics and negotiations go.

And the deal is $115 mill less risky than Mets deal and $150 mill less risky than Giants deal. The circumstances suggest about normal injury risk for at least this year and probably next. Eventually the $ reach a point where the benefit exceeds the risk.

Congrats to Carlos Correa for setting the new record for contracts agreed to in one offseason. Should stand for a long time (at least among significant players that weren't signed, released, repeat a few times)

I assume Boras is trying to find a way to get paid by the Giants snd Mets for negotiating the deal and then having it fall through.

In any case, he was going to make the Mets better even if it seemed like gilding the lily. I wonder if the Phillies really would have built the bullpen they built these past few weeks had the Mets not raised the ante (but then they probably would have had to add at the deadline, maybe that won't happen this year if all goes well).
