Gauging the likelihood of a Pivetta late-blossoming, were Dave Stewart, Curt Schilling, Jake Arrieta and Charlie Morton ever as bad as he has been?

Getting back to this one as I was thinking about it over the weekend. One common denominator of all of the above guys is that they went to multiple organizations at the ML level before things clicked. Stewart and Morton pitched for three ML teams before things fell into place for them with the Athletics and Astros respectively. Schilling was pitching for his third ML team when things fell into place with the Phillies (the Red Sox traded him to the Orioles when he was a minor leaguer) and Arrieta was with his second ML team (as is Pivetta currently, if he is for real). We see the same dynamic at work with all of those notable slow-blooming position players as well--guys like Jose Bautista, Brandon Moss, Chris Davis, Josh Hamilton and Marlon Byrd who all bounced around with little success at the ML level before becoming all-stars.

Dave Stewart was one of the biggest personnel blunders the Phillies have made. Reportedly, they were interested in getting him and then did, only to lose him to make a roster spot for a pitcher who ended up lasting only a very short time on the roster and was absolutely terrible. Stewart then went on to multiple twenty win seasons.

Grullon to the Mets. He really became well traveled in a hurry. The life of a AAAA player though he seems to be identified as such at a younger age than most.

Piling on Pivetta's strong start in Boston, Cole Irvin is off to a very good start in Oakland and far better than any of Moore, Anderson or Velasquez here. From Baseball America: "Irvin struck out eight in six innings of work in the team's loss to the Rays. The 27-year-old allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk. Irvin has pitched to a 2-3, 3.67 mark in five starts, with 25 strikeouts and four walks in 27 innings."

And Tony Watson has a 1.08 ERA in 9 innings with just 1 walk and 6Ks for Anaheim....(Falter, Romero, etc.)

Glad to see them all doing well. At this point Moore and Anderson seem like a lost bet, but I wont completely say that just yet. Someone had to see something there to sign them. I am just as worried about LF and CF. Where is Charlie Manual the hitting guru

Irvin would hurt the most IMO - Pivetta had his chances and needed the change of scenery. But time will still tell.

It does seem like the Phillies have made the wrong decisions on too many pitchers of late, but my optimistic self tells me they have to do better soon. I hated that they couldn't find a way to keep Watson this season, but he really didn't look all that good in spring games.

Pivetta always was ready to break out and be a solid starting pitcher, but always ended up disappointing. He had multiple chances with the Phillies. Sometimes it just takes a change of team or even a couple changes for a player to put things in place. Of course, for many, it just doesn't happen. They never live up to the potential. I hope the Phillies can pick up a pitcher or two during the season who can have a hot run later in the season.

I’m still skeptical of Pivetta. The results have been great so far, but his peripherals aren’t any better than they were with the Phils. 17 BB in 25.2 IP doesn’t seem like a good sign for continued effectiveness.
