Geez, sad few months for former standout Phillie pitchers. Jim Bunning passed away a couple of weeks ago and today former two sport star [NBA and MLB] Gene Conley passed away at 86.

Conley was a very good Phillie pitcher in 1959-60 and eventually played on 3 NBA championship Boston Celtic teams during his outstanding career. Never saw Conley pitch but had his baseball card and did see him play with the Celtics.

as i'm sitting here with a tear in my eye, is the Brewers Domingo Santana the same Domingo that the phils used to have. probably the worst/best player to be named later all time in a trade for each team. he WOULD be in the OF for the phils today. my my my. eddie wade still haunting the phils.

Technically it was Amaro's mistake but yes, same player. To make you feel worse there was some dispute over whether he was accidentally included on the player to be named list. I know I expected the player to be Leandro Castro at the time.

Madson is the sixth former 2008 Phillie to later suit up for the Nats. Werth, Stairs, Dobbs, Lidge and Blanton are the others. That list excludes Romero who pitched in the minors foe them.

Seeing that the Phillies face J.C. Ramirez tonight made me wonder where Phillippe Aumont and Tyson Gillies are these days. Interestingly, they are once again teammates, this time with the Ottawa Champions of the indy Can-Am League. Aumont actually doubles as pitcher/pitching coach.

After watching that play by Gamboa/Brito lastg night [the double play] I was reminded of the third part of the young infielder trio, Jonathan Arauz. He was thought by some to be the best of the 3 and was part of the Giles deal to Houston.

I decided to see how he was doing and it appears that he has struggled mightily since returning from his 80 game PED suspension last year. He is currently in A ball and hitting .219 and his numbers since he left Philadelphia are quite pedestrian.

Admittedly I don't follow Houston closely at all [other than Derek Fisher] but it appears right now that the Phils may not end up missing Arauz as much as we all thought when the deal was announced.

They are all still very young but the Phils certainly seem to have several young middle infielders in their stable and we haven't even seen Guthrie play yet and he reminds me of Scott Kingery, without quite the bat.

Well, when Kingery was drafted, many didn't really expect him to have quite the bat he seems to have, either.

For that matter, I can recall concerns (expressed at Philliesphans!) about whether Chase Utley "would ever be able to hit left-handers."

If Guthrie's makeup is as good as Utley's and Kingery's, then he may follow a similar development curve (e.g., actual development to the top of the projected ceiling, or better). Time will tell.

julio..agree, and Guthrie seems to play like Utley and Kingery. I think he could end up as the best player the Phils drafted this year. By all accounts he played injured all year and if you have played injured before [I have] its not only not fun, but hampers you in ways that you can't realize till it happens.

I read where the Phils are not going to play Guthrie this year, let him heal in Clearwater and be ready for the 2018 season. Good idea in my mind, the guy played lots of ball this spring.

maybe arauz was a product of the PED's. that is my concern for elniery.
