In that vein the Seattle trade was definitely a better one because our ability to move cash around was clearly part of that deal (getting Cutch allowed Santana to go).

I really wanted to add a couple of years to Realmuto's deal when we made that because the AAV would have been lower if it included this year's salary. He is going to be fully valued moving forward, so if we add 3 years and $50-$60 million to keep him that is not getting a catcher at a discount (in the years where catchers start to get hurt more). This was about 2 years and whether we could win in these 2 years. Probably figuring Sixto was 50-50 to get hurt also.

You cannot assume a decade of stability at C and SS had we held on to Alfaro and Crawford. The most you can assume is five years including 2019, because both of these guys entered 2019 with more than one season's service time. If they're good enough to stay in the majors, both will be eligible for FA after the 2023 season. That 2019-2023, five seasons. We have Realmuto under contract for two of those five seasons (through 2020); we have Segura under contract for four (through 2022).

So you're talking about three years' exposure at catcher, and one year at shortstop Yes, there's risk involved in these deals. But it's less than you might think.

Josh Taylor, the UDFA we flipped to AZ for international slots a few years ago, just made his major league debut with the Red Sox. Never was really that good in the minors until this season. Teach your kids to throw left-handed....

3) Former Phils 1st round pick Greg Golson - looking every bit like the great athlete and potential NFL defensive back he might have been in a different life - is also on the team. Still struggling with hitting.

Great ballpark and affordable family fun at Barnstormers games. Highly recommend it if you get the chance, especially if you have younger kids who won't care that it's not affiliated with major league farm systems and are just glad to be so close to the action, and at a price that is far more family-friendly than a trip to a big league game.

On the other side of the ball, Domonic Brown had a scholarship to play wide-receiver at Miami. Cozens had a schlarship to be a defensive back at Arizona. The Phillies also had Cord Sandberg who gave up baseball last year to belatedly go back to college to be a quarterback at Auburn.

If Hamels can get himself to 200 career wins without blowing up his ERA in his later years, I think he makes it to Cooperstown. Not a first ballot choice, but one who gets in. His career has caught (for now) a nice second wind with the Cubs. His almost a full season there matches up with his best Phillie seasons (10-5, 2.85 ERA, 27 G, 168 IP, 165 K, 55 BB, 1.143 WHIP).

I was just thinking that he's a borderline HOF. I'm not sure that 200 wins will get him in, but wouldn't be a complete shocker.

At some point the HOF is going to have to adjust their thinking on pitchers. Likely nobody is going to win 300 games again, career innings will be way down They are going to have to look at players in their era more, and based on that I don't think Hamels is one of the best of his era.
