Logan Morrison really needs the DH to stay in the league. He might be almost as good as Bruce at that role though. Less power but more walks and a couple of years younger. All without the burden of being a negative defensively in the field.

Darin Ruf makes the Giants roster with Belt and Longoria on the IL. He probably has a shot at some playing time at least in a platoon role. Guys like Wilmer Flores and the gigantic Pablo Sandoval are the competition. I think Pablo came into summer camp around 295.

With the expanded playoffs could Darin Ruf be the Cody Ross equivalent that leads to another Giants World Series, or is the Even year voodoo finished?
I'm still really bitter about that series, definitely the series loss I'm most frustrated about from that run of great Phillies teams.

That Giants bullpen was a be-atch that October.

I do agree that we win the 2010 WS if we got through that series and we probably win that series if we never traded away Lee. 2011 was just a case of a Cardinal team that got perfectly hot at the perfect time.

Josh Harrison had a good spring so it was surprising he didn’t make the Phillies. Harrison has interest from Atlanta, Texas, his hometown Cincinnati and Yanks so he should land somewhere.

If I recall we were within $3-$5 million of hitting the original competitive balance threshold with our March roster. So they had a couple million dollars of flexibility to stay under. The expanded roster took a million or two of that flexibility away. It is 12 person-weeks of expanded roster spots, but more like 32 weeks when pro-rated against a full season.

I think the Phillies want those 32 extra weeks at a minimum salary rather than one that might make $1.5-$2.0 million. I am not sure what the actual contract with Harrison was for, but one can be certain it had reachable incentives that could push it into more expensive areas and I believe incentives all get pro-rated too.

I think Harrison was just the first guy they signed. Walker is coming off a much better season. And Forsythe seemed to pass him in spring training too. Obviously he can still be a useful piece but we're talking about an older injury-prone guy whose last two seasons were .656 OPS and .480 OPS. He was not going to be better than Sean Rodriguez. Or Phil Gosselin. For sure Harrison was going to make more than Gosselin or Torreyes (or Garlick). And they don't really need another 2B/3B per se, especially with Bohm coming soon (which is also not something that would have happened in a normal season. But in a normal season only one of Walker, Harrison and Forsythe was going to make the team anyway).

The guy we really punted on for $ reasons was Brad MIller, who got $2 million guaranteed from St. Louis. We just didn't want to give the guarantee (since that's also what Walker is supposedly making).
