Mets sign Frankie Montas at age 32, two years, $34 million. HIs recent history.

2022: 6.35 ERA
2023: injured
2024 5.01 ERA with the Reds, 4.55 ERA with the Brewers. Made 30 starts between them.

Matthew Boyd with even less healthy history than Montas gets 2/29 from the Cubs. Has not exceeded 78 innings since 2019. He was pretty good in his 39.2 IP to close out last season, but this seems pretty risky.

2020 Matt Moore would probably get $14 million now. Walker may yet seem cheap in 2026 if he can find his way back to usability.

ESPN gave both of those pitching deals a "C" grade which seems about right to me. Risking $5-$10 million on pitchers with questions seems a better bet than close to $20 million. Ironically Taijuan Walker had theoretically ascended much more on the certainty ladder so what does anyone know here (other than pitching is scarce and big market teams don't seem to be losing money with big payrolls).

When I saw this story I just assumed Stark was having some fun, not that it was something Manfred had talked about. Also kind of amazing he didn't actually mention the idea comes from the Bananas (though the one skeptic did).

Hard to imagine them really doing something this drastic. But I also get it. Baseball's actually succeeded in getting younger over the last five years - correlation if not causation with all the changes old-timers don't like.

It might fly if they only did it for the 10th inning (or, only in extras and still only once. Up to the team when to burn it).

yeah that's only just a bit more than Craig Kimbrel (2022) or Corey Knebel money. He was better than I would have expected last year. But that still leaves open the question of what Hoffman or Estevez can get.

It was always going to reach $600 million given his age and the length of contract. Whether deferrals are involved to hit that mark is the question (since Ohtani is valued at something like $44-$46 AAV over 10 years). I imagine the Soto AAVs will be in that range whereever the total amount ends up.
