The Yankees have declined their 2025 club option for INF Anthony Rizzo.

— New York Yankees ( @Yankees ) November 2, 2024

At those prices I would do either / both. If we dont sign one we are going to have to fill the spot from FA anyway, there is not a candidate in the minors for the start of the season unless we want to "carry" a minor leaguer and hope. If we go FA, as crazy as it sounds, we are going to spend $10M/season or slightly less.

Both guys were good. It is not like we are spending a huge amount on the bullpen, these guys would be #1 and #2 in salary if we did this.

I am guessing we can only afford one and hoping that maybe Hoffman will take a home team discount for the organization that rebuilt him.

I also expect a trade for somebody a few years away from free agency like the Soto trade. DD seems to freely trade second tier prospects for items that have value but might be getting more expensive (i.e. they have hit arbitration).

Cole staying in NY

Right-hander Gerrit Cole is remaining with the New York Yankees on the four-year, $144 million deal that he had opted out of, sources told ESPN. Discussions on a potential contract extension will continue. Essentially, it’s the same as if Cole did not opt out.

MLB’s Qualifying Offers list (Wow who would have ever guessed Nick Pivetta!)
The deadline to accept or reject a qualifying offer is Nov. 19.

Juan Soto (OF) | New York Yankees

Corbin Burnes (RHP) | Baltimore Orioles

Anthony Santander (OF) | Baltimore Orioles

Alex Bregman (3B) | Houston Astros

Willy Adames (SS) | Milwaukee Brewers

Pete Alonso (1B) | New York Mets

Sean Manaea (LHP) | New York Mets

Luis Severino (RHP) | New York Mets

Teoscar Hernández (OF) | Los Angeles Dodgers

Nick Pivetta (RHP) | Boston Red Sox

Christian Walker (1B) | Arizona Diamondbacks

Nick Martinez (RHP) | Cincinnati Reds

Max Fried (LHP) | Atlanta Braves

Yeah it's quite a long list. But I don't see anyone the Phillies would be in on aggressively. A few of those pitchers might have been dark-horse candidates had they not gotten one. Hopefully Santander is less interesting to them now if he ever was.

The Pivetta thing is pretty wild. I do think it goes to show why the Phillies would love to see Walker figure it out, and won't just cut him loose. His deal would still be fair WAR for the dollar if he can get back to his 2023 self. Is someone really going to give Nick P a similar three-year deal? We shall see.

It just goes to show you that a 1-year deal for a mid-career average starter is good business. The Phillies gambled and lost with Jeremy Hellickson, but the long term dollars involved were zero.

This could actually be the way to deal with Ranger when he is up if he does not want a team-friendly contract (which really will be necessary for anything long term). Overpay Ranger a bit on a year to year basis. Or get him on a contract that is more like Walker's (4/72 maybe with innings incentives to add a bit more). Obviously Ranger will need a decent year to get a QO next year, but we all hope that happens anyway.

Shohei Ohtani suffered a labrum tear when he suffered what the Dodgers initially described as a slight dislocation of his left shoulder in Game 2 of the World Series. He underwent surgery today. The Dodgers say he will be ready for spring training.

8 days later

Got it right here - Walker is not strong enough. He's got to make a commitment to get stronger with more cardio and lots of reps with lighter wieghts. Maybe eat a level better, too.

Walker should be motivated to save his career. The Phils surely are.

Orioles messing with LF again.

The Baltimore Orioles are moving their left-field wall in by 9 to 20 feet and are lowering it from 13 feet to 8 feet, the Orioles announce today, as Orioles hitters wildly celebrate the news https://t.co/SLbKcr76OO

Santander contract negotiations? He is a switch hitter but there would be some advantage for him.

I guess 142 decent innings from a 34-year-old is worth $21 million these days. Kind of feels like Jeremy Hellickson though from a small market team that can't afford to miss on that big a salary.

Well we definitely didn't need this guy in CF (RHB, free-swinger, among the worst OBPs and BA in MLB).

Yeah, I remember that. KIentak fiercely clung to him at the trade deadline demanding first-round pick value that he didn't have.

Non-tender deadline tomorrow night. Austin Hays and Jose Ruiz on the list. Might be some cheaper outfield platoon bats to look into also.
