Possible Phillies intramural DSL playoff series?

I was at the Iron Pig games last night. It was a perfect night for baseball and just about the worst baseball game possible: the Iron Pigs struck out 12 times without a walk. Our pitchers walked 9 and gave up 15 hits. It was a good game through 3 innings, then the Pigs could do little right. I've been thinking, 'wasn't Grullon the guy who was always the great defensive catching prospect who couldn't hit? Now he's hitting and analysts are saying his D is suspect. What?'. On a stolen base attempt, his throw was very wide and as hight as could be without going into RCF gap. He did have a hit. Listi back at 3B. I have to wonder how awful Jan Hernandez became defensively, since he is playing in the OF, but was drafted and started minors as 3B. I remember how excited many of us were about Jan Hernandez when he was drafted. Like Grullon, he had a hit and 2 Ks. Grullon only 23 all season. Is he the backup catcher in Philly next season or does he repeat AAA.

Hard to say at this point. I'll bet he doesn't get exposed to the rule 5 draft again this year, though.

He has done enough to let him compete for the backup job with Knapp, though I could also see them bring somebody in if the defense for both catchers is seen as suspect. We have backed off on Realmuto's usage a bit the last few weeks, but I would say his offensive under-performance is likely due to small, nagging injuries more than anything else. Having a good backup catcher would make it easier to rest him a few days when needed.

Good point about Realmuto's offensive work, andyb. It wouldn't surprise me at all if, after the season, we find out maybe that groin injury (or something else we don't know about) hampered him much of the season. I feel like there's a lot more in there with JT than what he's shown. He hasn't been terrible, but he's had a B-/C+ year with the bat, for me, in light of what I think he's capable of based on his career in Florida.

Let's ask about Grullion again on August 1. But if all else changes I could see a spring training competition (and yes, three catchers on the 40 for the first time in a while).

I would think Knapp has modest off-season trade value, young, switch-hitter, not useless, but then again, Rupp had no value and he was once a starter.
